Japan: Falling Asleep on Trains

A Tsukuba Express train driver fell asleep at the wheel and was reported by a customer who used his cell phone to film the driver's slumber. While many bloggers expressed relief that this didn't cause an accident, ruhiginoue wonders why the line needs drivers [ja] when it's equipped with an automatic train operation system (ATO) and blogger a205750un asks if there's something in the electromagnetic rays that induces sleepiness [ja].

  • if there’s an automatic driver then it doesn’t take electromagnetic rays to force someone into sleep. The driver gets bored and distracted.
And even if they don’t “fall asleep” they can be totally distracted.

Did you read the immediate comment below it?

\The operation management is done with ATO just like the under metropolitan management Oedo Line as for the main line, and the working on a plane motorman is doing the operation that pushes the open close and the starting button of the door in the operating step.
The motorman is working on a plane to deal with the contingency though it only has to automate the operation of the train completely if the motorman doesn’t need. Therefore, it runs for the manual driving when the operating step of the train is equipped with the key switch that switches \Automatic operation\, \Semiautomatic\, and \Manual operation\, and it participates from the Takamatsu [**kuruma] district in Hikarigaoka Station for the under metropolitan management Oedo Line. To reach the operating step by the infrared rays transmission etc. , the image of the station premise is designed, and by the way, the motorman sees the monitor of the operating step and is confirming safety. The operation situation of ATO (position of the notch and position of the brake) is always displayed in the submonitor of the other. Moreover, the starting button of the train is put on two parallel, and the train doesn’t start if two are not pushed at the same time. \
