Sri Lankan blogger Mathawaada, who blogs at A Collision Of Ideas, laments on the civil war hearing the news that the LTTE rebels are finally being defeated militarily: “Ah…this war. Yes, this war is older than me, just like anyone in their early twenties I also grew up with it. Of course the battles didn’t affect us directly but the constant fear and distress always tormented our minds.”

Well I am a tamil with Singhalese education and now 53 years old. When we were young my parents occasionaly spoke to us about some communial problems arround the year 1956 but did not register so well in our minds. When we were growing up we were really not aware if we were tamils or Singhalese. I suppose it didn’t matter at the time because we were all so well together. Playing, schooling, going out, boozing and even inter marrieages. The generation after us is born with influenced differences. The media cries day in and day out about ‘us’ and ‘them’. I am sad for you guys. What will you tell your children.
