South Africa: Is online business a good idea?

Ramon Thomas believes that there is a future in online business in South Africa: “And even through less than 10% of South Africans have Internet access that is going to change with huge investment in infrastructure for the 2010 Worldcup. Don’t wait any longer, get broadband, get a website and start thinking of what information or products you can sell to that 1.1 billion Internet users worldwide.”

  • Yes, I really believe the opportunity is to do virtual export business i.e. selling information-based products from Africa to the rest of the world. Some area we are strong in of course is mining and related industries.

  • The truth is we can not run away from the growth and opportunity the internet is posing. In a few years from now I see business on the internet generating a good amount of their yearly turnover. It only takes the infrastructure to become available and affordable to the end users. Once that happens buying and selling will become real strong. But the earlier businesses start to get use to the internet the better it will be to avoid a “marketing-panic syndrome”.
