Road Safety in Nigeria – Where Lies The Solution?, Fidelis Nnadi asks: “For years, prominent Nigerians have fallen victims of road traffic accident with no enforceable policies and regulations to tackle the carnage. Among major cause of road traffic accidents in Nigeria are drunkenness, poor quality drivers, fake and sub-standard spare parts, bad roads and overspeeding.”

Road saftey in Nigeria should start with “roads”. With good roads they we’ll be able to do the rest. Most drivers in Nigeria have never driven on good roads and cannot be classified as drivers. With bad roads especially in the SE there is less respect for other road users-driving on the wrong side of the road and police check points all contribute to the reckless loss of life on Nigerian highways. Nigerian roads are in shameful conditions and that is where the solution should start.
Road Safety Solution as below
1 Good Road and Road information eg speed limit, Bumps ahead, Exit etc
2. Police Presence- Police enforcement using Camera to determine Speed, Road worthiness of the vehicle (Tyre, Lights, in general all operating systems that are in place making a vehicle road worthy)
3. Drivers Behavior- Drunkenness, Reckless
4- Police Check point and thorough checking against Robbery on Highways either on Passengers and on Vhicle
