Sleeping or Dead: Dispatches from the Syrian Prison System

“Sleeping or Dead” is a six-part series by activist Sarmad Al Jilane about his experiences in the Syrian prison system. Al Jilane, who is now lives in Turkey, is one of the founders and current coordinator of ‘Raqqa Is Being Slaughtered Silently‘, a loosely organized group of activists described by the New Yorker as “a kind of underground journalistic-activist enterprise”. The group has been struggling since the start of the revolution against Bashar Al Assad's regime and then, when the Free Syrian Army (FSA)-held city fell, ISIS.
