The Republic of South Sudan is Africa’s newest country. A referendum took place in January 2011 which resulted in 99% of South Sudanese voting for independence from the north. South Sudan's formal independence was declared on 9 July, 2011. On 14 July, 2011, the country became a United Nations member state.

The referendum was a consequence of the 2005 Naivasha Agreement between the Khartoum central government and the Sudan People's Liberation Army/Movement (SPLA/M). A separate referendum was supposed to be held regarding the accession of the disputed Abyei areas to South Sudan, but has been postponed due to conflict over demarcation and residency rights. South Sudan is also at war with internal armed groups which have led to the displacement of thousands of people.
