By mid July 2014, the Facebook page No to sex tourist was created, with the purpose of create awareness about sex tourism in Colombia. Wikipedia lo define como:

… una forma de turismo con el propósito de mantener relaciones sexuales, normalmente de varones con prostitutas hembras, pero también, aunque menos, hay mujeres turistas sexuales y turismo sexual homosexual masculino.

Sex tourism is travel to engage in sexual activity, particularly with prostitutes. The World Tourism Organization, a specialized agency of the United Nations, defines sex tourism as “trips organized from within the tourism sector, or from outside this sector but using its structures and networks, with the primary purpose of effecting a commercial sexual relationship by the tourist with residents at the destination”.

Recently, the fan page posted this video, as part of a campaign by Pazamanos Foundation with the intention to reject sex tourists who mainly visit the city of Medellín.

So is there a difference when people travel for sex or if the locals patronize the brothels? It is the same thing as saying, since some Colombians travel to work as prostitutes, we should then prevent ALL Colombians from traveling or assume they are traveling for that reason. If Colombia did not have so many prostitutes to who 99% serve the local men, there would be NO sex tourists, so it is the problem created by Colombians and not foreigners. Even in Canada we get sex tourists because our prostitution laws are (were) more liberal then the USA and even Germany has a huge number of sex tourists. So chill out. You want to stop it, fix your own domestic issues.

What hypocrisy! As Mark said, this is a Colombian business, with Colombians frequenting the establishments, and Colombians working in the business. Less than 1% of it involves foreigners, but oh, let’s “Say no to the Sex Tourist”. Colombians visit brothels and pay the women pennies, smack them, call them names, abuse minors, and no one thinks anything of it. Foreigners pay significantly more, treat the women with more respect and are grateful for the experience, and rarely ever have anything to do with a minor. But still no one criticizes Colombian men for visiting the establishments.

Could it be that Colombians are tired of foreigners raising the prices, the expectations for treatment, and the opportunities of the sex workers? Or could it be that you’re just tired of the world seeing the income disparity between the Strata 6 snobs and the rest of the population which are happy to take foreigners’ money from them and earn more in an hour than they can from you in a week.

This is simple envy and base Xenophobia.
