This was Beit Hanoun, Gaza, today – tweets @MaxBlumenthal in the first of a series of photographs he posts on Twitter showing the extent of the damage he witnessed
Jewish-American journalist, author and blogger Max Blumenthal visited Gaza's Beit Hanoun on the north-eastern border with Israel on August 15. He was accompanied by Palestine-based journalist Dan Cohen.
Gazans were taking advantage of a much-anticipated ceasefire between Hamas and Israel to try and salvage what they can from the rubble. Prior to the ceasefire, the offensive in Gaza had claimed the lives of 1,951 people, including over 70 families and 467 children, according to the Gaza Health Ministry. Israeli NGO B'TSelem has confirmed the death of at least 1,767 Gazans and 431 children while the percentage of civilians killed ranges from 73 to 80 per cent according to the United Nations.
What Blumenthal and Cohen saw, however, was a town “completely flattened” by Israeli aerial and tank attacks. Beit Hanoun made worldwide headlines when an Israeli strike on a UN school killed 15 civilians on the 24th of July despite the UN asking the IDF for time to evacuate. Unfortunately, the devastation was not limited to a single school as you will see below.
The following is the timeline of their visit:

Why is the relevant that the journalist is Jewish? This has nothing to do with the piece.
It’s a relevant because of standards of Israeli propaganda. Everybody who dares to criticize Israeli occupation of Gaza & West Bank and protests against crimes of Israeli authorities is routinely accused of anti-semitism. In case of a Jew, such accusation sounds absurd.
This is the aftermath of the continuing 66-year old colonialist enterprise that will only end when all Palestinians are “thrown into the sea”!
Very sad. Seems like if HAMAS cared about it’s people it would put a stop to it immediately.
Would u stop fighting if your homes, farms, property & lives of your parents, children, relatives, friends & neighbous were taken away & threatened
I would look for the cause and how to fix. Israel is not going to stop defending themselves, right?
If I were a Gazan I’d want HAMAS out ASAP. They’re interest is in their own power and ideals, not in make the Gazan’s lives better.
First of all, Israel has been committing atrocities to Gaza since all the way back in the 60’s, long before Hamas even existed. By definition this is called attacking not ‘defending’ if you are mainly aiming at unarmed civilians.
Secondly its only a fair logic that if a country is going to occupy someone else’s land and treat its population as subhuman who can never be allowed to go back to where they originally lived, that occupying power will inevitably face aggression and violent resistance. And they don’t even have a military force of their own, this is why Hamas exists!
Most people (including me) are against Hamas, but they would never be where they are now if not for the ongoing occupation and ethnic cleansing.
If Israel cared about peace, they would stop the occupation in the west bank, they would lift the siege of gaza and give palestinians equal rights, thereby avoiding violent resistance.
So Israel firing back at HAMAS for firing rockets is not called “defending” but HAMAS’ firing of rockets at civilians, digging tunnels into civilian areas, etc is called “resistance”?
As for stopping the occupation, isn’t that what they tried in Gaza?
Robby, let me ask u do u have a right to make a slave another human by kidnapping from Africa to cotton pick ur fields? Which west did! Do west have a right to scalp Indians as savages? As they did! Do Jews have right to grab land, treat Palestinians same as Hitler enforce Apartheid System Holocaust of Jews in Germany? Even, when Jews were offered lands in other countries like Germany, Africa but did not accept. WHY? It is acase of victim victimizing victims, WHY? What kind of mental sickos are these Jews? If u look at history they have been prosecuted by Christians & Pagans throughtout history & will continue as they disobeyed God Almighty & killed Prophets of God Almighty. It is a curse & promise from of Almighty they never live in peace in this world till End of Times. In fact there will be no Israel, there will be no Jew left till they are all killed or accept & live by Last Divine Book & Prophet what God Almighty sent to all Mankind.
