The movement for justice against Bangladesh's war criminals at Shahbag [1] or “Generation Square”, as it is now being called, has entered its fourteenth day.
Under the International Crimes Tribunal [2], political leaders from the Islamist party Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami [3] and the Bangladesh Nationalist Party [4] (BNP) are being indicted for genocide, rape, arson, looting and other crimes against humanity committed during Bangladesh's Liberation War of 1971. [5] The tribunal has already delivered guilty verdicts to two war criminals.
On 5 February 2013, the International Crimes Tribunal sentenced the General Secretary of the Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami party, Abdul Quader Mullah [6], to life in prison [7] for killing 344 people, rape, and other war crimes [8]. The public rejected this verdict and gathered at Shahbag [1] in a protest called by the Bloggers and Online Activists’ Network [9] (BOAN), demanding that Mullah be given the death sentence.
