The movement for justice against Bangladesh's war criminals at Shahbag or “Generation Square”, as it is now being called, has entered its fourteenth day.
Under the International Crimes Tribunal, political leaders from the Islamist party Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami and the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) are being indicted for genocide, rape, arson, looting and other crimes against humanity committed during Bangladesh's Liberation War of 1971. The tribunal has already delivered guilty verdicts to two war criminals.
On 5 February 2013, the International Crimes Tribunal sentenced the General Secretary of the Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami party, Abdul Quader Mullah, to life in prison for killing 344 people, rape, and other war crimes. The public rejected this verdict and gathered at Shahbag in a protest called by the Bloggers and Online Activists’ Network (BOAN), demanding that Mullah be given the death sentence.
