Peru: Questioning the Death Toll Caused by Terrorism

Categories: Latin America, Peru, Citizen Media, History, Human Rights, War & Conflict

An investigation [1] [es] by economist and blogger Silvio Rendón on the numbers of dead and missing given by the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (CVR [2][es]) became a front page headline [3] [es] and a feature article [4] [es] in the daily Correo.

Rendón offers and alternative calculation resulting in “28 thousand dead and missing, 60% caused by the State (16,500) and 40% (11,000) by Shining Path [5]”, this stands in contrast to the numbers gathered by the CVR: “69 thousand dead and missing, 40% caused by the State and 60% by Shining Path.”
