The watchdog for accuracy in news reporting in Japan reports [ja] in its website gohoo.org that several major Japanese newspapers have recently written posts on the Senkaku (Diaoyu) Islands, which are currently part of an ownership dispute with China (for example), based on false information.

A tweet from @watchdog_japan [ja] warns:

【注意報】「中国漁船1千隻 尖閣海域へ」 引用元記事に注意 http://gohoo.org/alerts/120920/ →中国漁船1000隻が尖閣に出港したとの報道は、引用された中国メディアの元記事が既に削除されています。別の引用元記事も「不完全な統計」と断り書きがありました。

[alert] watch out for the sources of a quote for “1,000 Chinese boats headed for Senkakus” http://gohoo.org/alerts/120920/ → the original source for 1000 Chinese boats headed for Senkakus in Chinese media has been deleted. Other sources of quote said in its explanatory note that “statistics are faulty”

According to Jiji press [en, ja], Hiroshi Majima, who heads the 11th Regional Coast Guard Headquarters in Naha told Okinawa's Lieutenant Governor Yoshiyuki Uehara that information that a large number of Chinese fishing boats were heading for the Senkaku Islands in Okinawa Prefecture was false.
