China’s State Administration of Radio Film and Television (SARFT) has recently set restrictions [1] [zh] on entertainers with a “bad image” from appearing on stage, resulting in the withdrawal of Japanese porn star Sola Aoi [2] from being featured on television shows in China.
Sola Aoi is the most popular porn star in China. During the Shanghai Expo 2010, she served as a spokesperson for a portal website in some of the major Expo activities. Her Sina Weibo account [3] [zh] has more than 11 million fans.
Despite the fact that Sola is adjusting her image in China by shooting artistic online micro-movies, she cannot escape from the ban. Her fans of course are very frustrated. To express their support to Sola, a number of them decided to display a slogan in a football match in Guangzhou [4] on April 17, 2012. It said: “Diaoyu Islands [5] [refers to a territorial dispute of islands by both China and Japan] belongs to us, Sola Aoi belongs to the World”:
The slogan, which captures both nationalistic sentiment in term of the territorial claim of the Diaoyu Islands [5] and the international solidarity of porn fans, quickly attracted a lot of attention and spread through the Internet.
Weibo user Song Zude's comment [7] [zh] has best represented the frustration of Sola's Chinese fans:
There are more than 1,866 comments follows Song's micro-blog, with a majority echoing his opinion:
Yang Guoying explains [9] [zh] why Sola Aoi is so popular in China:
