The Armenian Observer posts the harrowing details of at least 26 ethnic Armenian victims [1] of the Sumgait pogrom [2] which took place on 27 February 1988 and which seriously escalated the conflict between Armenia and Azerbaijan over the disputed territory of Nagorno Karabakh. Six Azerbaijanis were also killed in the inter-ethnic violence which broke out after reports of violence against ethnic Azeris in Southern Armenia reached the industrial town in Azerbaijan. Meanwhile, a day earlier, Azerbaijanis marked the 20th anniversary of the massacre of their ethnic kin in Khojaly [3] during the height of fighting in Nagorno Karabakh.
