Iran: Where Is My Classmate?

Categories: Middle East & North Africa, Iran, Citizen Media, Freedom of Speech, Governance, Human Rights, Politics, Protest

Several empty chairs in Iran's universities were formerly occupied by students who have now vanished. Some are deprived of education for religious reasons, such as members of the persecuted Baha'i [1] religious minority [2], others have been jailed for political activities, killed in the street, or forced to leave Iran. In the best of circumstances, students have merely been expelled.

This year Tahkim Vahdat [3], a leading student protest group, called for an “Empty Seat Campaign”, all over the world, on December 7, Iran's student day [4], to remember the victims of lost hope for the wish to be educated. A Facebook page [5] was launched, and several films were shared on YouTube to display solidarity with departed and repressed students in Iran. Here are three of them.
