Peru: Mick Jagger Visits Lima

Categories: Latin America, Peru, Arts & Culture, Humor, Music

The rumor that Mick Jagger [1], the famous singer from The Rolling Stones, was visiting Lima began to spread on the afternoon of Saturday, October 8, 2011.

It all started with a blurry picture [2] shared by Twitter user César Bejarano (@Cesar_Bejarano [3]) which was then re-published on the online version of local newspaper Perú 21 [4] [es]. In it, we can see someone who looks like the well-known English artist, but that's about it.

On Sunday, October 9, other newspapers confirmed the news and a video on YouTube even appeared, posted by user fmphotos [5], showing Mick Jagger at the Jorge Chavez International Airport in Lima:

Peruvian bloggers and Twitter users are discussing the unexpected visit:

According to “TV Rock” former host, Cucho Peñaloza, Rolling Stones vocalist Mick Jagger arrived to our country to travel around Lima and Puerto Maldonado. The only image that has been released so far is this blurry image that a Twitter account showed from inside of the San Isidro Country Club Hotel.

On Twitter, the hashtags #mickjagger [8] and #mickjaggerenlima [9] have the Twittersphere talking.

According to William Amaya (@dkden77e [10]), the artist has reached old age:

@DJPaulBsAs [11]: #MickJagger [12] confessed he spends more time on Facebook than playing a guitar // he is old now, isn't he?

While Mucho Vicio (@muchovicio [13]) makes fun of some of the favorite activities of middle-aged women:

Having tea with Mick Jagger. Then to bingo and maybe, if the night is favorable, charades with the groupies. And to bed.

Daniel Morales (@dasang [14]) asks:

#MickJaggerEnLima [15] please make him say #calata [16] #huachafo [17] or one of those words that are funny when gringos say them!

‘Calato’, masculine form of the adjective ‘calata’, means naked or, in an extended use, someone who has no money; and ‘huachafo’ can be translated as tacky.

Helena (@HeleNa_Sz_ [18]) wants to know where she can find Mick Jagger:

And right now, where in Peru is #MickJagger [12] [19] ?

Oswaldo Azk (@azk1610 [20]) shares a link with Mick Jagger's plans for this visit to Peru:

#MickJagger [12] is accommodated at hotel in Lima and would go to Puerto Maldonado periodismoenlinea.org/desde-peru/15/… [21]

Puerto Maldonado [22] is a Southern city in Peru, the capital of the Madre de Dios department, on the Peruvian Amazon region.

Many users are alluding with a mocking tone to something that occurred more than 20 years ago: Monique Pardo, a Peruvian artist, met Mick Jagger in Iquitos [23]. The blog Doctor Monique [24] [es] tells us about the meeting:

[Monique Pardo] says she went closer to take a picture of him with a gray Nikon she had taken away from her boyfriend, who stayed silent throughout the whole scene, as if he was an extra, and she asked her idol to pose as if he were reading. Mick opened a paperback book he had with him and tried some mannered poetry with his movements. Pardo recalls having felt as if a mouse had agitated her stomach out of fear. Finally, she shot the camera as best as she could, on a useless attempt to make him hers, at least for a second. Jagger stood up and the three of them kept silent. Monique, taking pity on her boyfriend, said goodbye to Mick.

With this in mind, Gonzalo Alarcón (@Gonzaloalarco [25]) jokes about Jagger's visit:

Joder #MickJagger en Lima y nadie enterado? Será que #MoniquePardo [26] lo habrá secuestrado?

Gosh #MickJagger in Lima and no one knows? Could it be that #MoniquePardo [26] has kidnapped him?
