Macedonia: Omertà Exceptions

Categories: Eastern & Central Europe, North Macedonia, Digital Activism, Freedom of Speech, Human Rights, Politics, Protest

A review of the Macedonian online-only commercial media that do not define themselves as pro-opposition confirms the notion that the protests against police brutality [1] are a taboo [2]. A lot of portals carry just a few news items about this topic, mainly spin-loaded reprints from the state news agency MIA [3]. Notable exceptions that provide added value include market leaders: portal On.net (which published an influential and much quoted article [4] [mk] on civic responsibility by Igor Stefanovski, and photo gallery [5]) and aggregator Time.mk (which compiled a timeline of police brutality [6] [mk] 2006-2011 with links to unresolved cases [7]).
