Kerala was rife with outrage, when a 23 year old girl Soumya was thrown out from a moving passenger train [1], raped and brutally murdered. The intriguing thing was when she was being attacked and thrown out of the train, none of the passengers lifted a finger to stop the train by pulling the emergency chain. It was a clear demonstration of the callousness of the Kerala society towards woman and crimes committed against them.
Govindaswamy, [2] the accused was nabbed by the police and is currently in custody. According to the state police, he seems to be a beggar with a criminal background. Suddenly things took an interesting turn when blogs started to write how this person who seemingly lived by meager means is now supported by a battalion of lawyers, five of them. The media was strangely silent on this issue until a blogger ‘verutheoruila’ started the campaign with a blog post.

The blogger collected articles and snippets which were in the ‘unnoticeable’ sections and brought them into the forefront. With the title, “Please don't murder Soumya again [4]” [ml], the blogger gives a detailed account of the happenings to date.
Verutheorila concludes his post with,

ഇന്റര്‍നെറ്റ് അടക്കമുള്ള മാധ്യമങ്ങളിലൂടെ ഒരു ജനത ഉണര്‍ന്നെണീക്കുന്നതിന്റെ സാധ്യതകള്‍ ഹസാരേയുടെ സമരം കാണിച്ചു തന്നതാണ്. കേരളത്തില്‍ അത്തരം സാധ്യതകള്‍ ആരായേണ്ട നേരമാണിത്. അതിനു നമുക്കായില്ലെങ്കില്‍ സൌമ്യയെ കോടതി മുറിയില്‍ വീണ്ടും ക്രൂരമായി കൊലപ്പെടുത്തുന്നതിന് നമ്മളും പങ്കാളികളാവുകയാവും ഫലം.
There has been an overflow of support from all quarters of the online community regarding this and with two hundred plus commentators to the original post, this blog has forced the mainstream media to take notice.

What should Kerala’s society be? A civilized society or a society that protects its criminals? We need to make sure it is the first, that we believe in justice. If the lawmakers tend to forget it, we have to remind them of their duties. We should be able to do that.
There was a powerful movement earlier for Soumya, we need to make sure the flame doesn't disappear. We need statistics, signatures, people behind this. So try to do the needful. There is a sad fact which I experienced personally, this is a country which “protects” criminals a lot, and police doesn't do anything unless the case gains some publicity. The police who are supposed to investigate the case, will investigate(sometimes) and people with money, power and influence are always protected. Lets think that something will happen, but the court is helpless unless facts with evidence is provided.
With the public losing the trust in mainstream media, blogs with the individual's voices have revolutionized how we get our news and online campaigns like these gives voice to the common man which cannot be ignored.
