Toussaint on Haiti says that although he sees the merits of the United Nations, “in the case of Haiti, they are causing more harm than good. Whether it's in providing support in running elections or with earthquake reconstruction the UN comes across as a bloated, inefficient organization that's often out of touch with the needs of Haiti.”

Anyone who thinks the UN mission in Haiti is a failure doesn’t remember Haiti before they arrived. However such a mission loses its value the longer it goes on. The Haitian National Police are a much more professional force than they were 10 years ago. But there aren’t enough of them yet to maintain order, or serve as first responders, and the political environment is still way too volatile for the MINUSTAH to leave.
