As the debate on the pesticide EndoSulfan is gaining momentum in the Stockholm Convention in Geneva; Kerala, the southern state of India is up in arms online and on the streets for pressurizing the Indian Government to favor the ban.

Kasargod, a district in the state of Kerala is living in a nightmare with a certain population of brutal victims attributed to the misuse of this pesticide. Online forums are buzzing with Ban Endosulfan posters and live discussions.

Thulasi Kakkat, a photo blogger, posted an evocative picture aptly title ‘End’. He refers to another 10 year old victim who died recently from the after effects of using this pesticide in the cashew plantations in Kasargod.

The debate on endosulfan is a very emotional one, as one sees the horrifying pictures of handicapped victims which reminds of a nuclear attack and as most of the affected are children. But there are a few other voices who are trying to put things in a different perspective.

Physel Pollil, another blogger writes why the Indian Government is hesitant towards banning this pesticide.

യുറോപ്യന്‍ യൂനിയന്റെ ഫണ്ട് കൈപ്പറ്റുന്ന ഒരു സന്നദ്ധ സംഘടന മാത്രമാണ് കാസര്‍ഗോട്ടെ പ്രശ്നത്തിന് കാരണം എന്‍ഡോസല്‍ഫാന്‍ ആണെന്ന് പറഞ്ഞിട്ടുള്ളത്. സര്‍ക്കാ‍ര്‍ നിയമിച്ച ഒരു കമ്മറ്റിയും അങ്ങനെ പറഞ്ഞിട്ടില്ല. കാസര്‍ഗോട്ടെ രോഗബാധിതരുടെ ദൈന്യാവസ്ഥ യൂറോപ്യന്‍ യൂനിയനിലെ മള്‍ട്ടിനേഷനല്‍ പെസ്റ്റിസൈഡ് കമ്പനികള്‍ക്ക് വേണ്ടി അധാര്‍മ്മികമായി ഉപയോഗപ്പെടുത്തുകയാണ് എന്‍ഡോസല്‍ഫാന്‍ വിരുദ്ധര്‍ ചെയ്യുന്നത്. യഥാര്‍ത്ഥത്തില്‍ കാസര്‍ഗോട്ടെ രോഗകാരണം കണ്ടെത്തുകയാണ് വേണ്ടത്. അത്തരം ഒരു ആലോചന പോലും ആരും നടത്തുന്നില്ല എന്നത് ആ രോഗബാധിതരോടുള്ള കടുത്ത ചതിയാണെന്നാണ് എനിക്ക് പറയാനുള്ളത്.

As recently as last week, Keralas’ current chief minister V.S Achuthandan (member of the Communist Party of India) led a big team of volunteers in a one day fasting protest for supporting the ban. Kerala witnessed a hartal organized by the same party on April 29th 2011 to pressurize the Indian Government.

As this article is written, the pesticide has come under a global ban as a conclusion from the Stockholm Convention, even though experts say it will take another five years to take effect. These are not answers however to the current victims and the poison that seeped into Kasargod, for generations to come.
