Bahrain: Curfew Announced and An Officer's Funeral

Categories: Middle East & North Africa, Bahrain, Human Rights, Politics, Protest

This post is part of our special coverage of Bahrain Protests 2011 [1].

Wednesday was a day marked by violence and gunfire [2] in Bahrain as policy and army cracked down on protests [3]. A State of National Security was called Tuesday, as troops of the Gulf Cooperation Council from Saudi Arabia and United Arab Emirates entered the country. On Wednesday afternoon, the Bahrain Defense Force announced in their 4th statement that a curfew will be imposed until further notice (via Bahrain News Agency [4]):

A curfew is imposed starting Wednesday 16 March 2011, and until further notice, between 4 pm and 4 am in the area extending from the Saif Flyover until the traffic lights before the Shaikh Isa bin Salman Bridge, including 400 metres on either side of the highway. The residents of this area should coordinate with the checkpoints to facilitate officially their movement. Gatherings, rallies, demonstrations and sit-ins are not allowed anywhere in the Kingdom of Bahrain until the situation is back to normal.
All citizens and residents must cooperate fully with the checkpoints for the sake of their safety. Anyone who violates these measures will face the appropriate legal action
Peace and God’s mercy and blessing be upon you
