Brazil: Twitter raises awareness of plight of São Paulo squatters

Categories: Latin America, Brazil, Humanitarian Response, Media & Journalism, Protest, Technology

Around two thousand people, many of whom are slum dwellers who face the threat of eviction, occupied four abandoned buildings in central São Paulo early Monday morning, calling for improved housing projects. The organisers, Frente de Luta por Moradia [1] (Front for the Struggle for Housing, FLM), have been using Twitter [2] to cover the occupation and successfully garner a wider response [3] [pt], including from mainstream media. Talks between the occupiers and representatives from the city's Housing Department are due to recommence this afternoon (7th October). Follow the coverage here [2].
