Among magnificent smiles, shining crowns and a cheering crowd, on Monday night Miss Mexico 2010 – Jimena Navarrete – won [1] this year's Miss Universe contest [2] at the Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino in Las Vegas, USA. As hosts Natalie Morales and Bret Michaels introduced different categories among the stunning contestants, Twitter users located all around the world shared comments with hashtags related to the topic (#missuniverse [3] and the Spanish version, #missuniverso [4]), showing their interest and support. Mexican Twitter users, particularly, displayed some amusing comments during and after the contest.

Jorge Miranda (@Georgepogoda) [6]suggested [es] [7] Mexicans celebrate at the angel of independence [8] monument, one of the most representative symbols of the capital, Mexico City:

Si gana la de México nos vamos al angel? #missuniverso

If the Mexican one wins, should we gather at the angel? #missuniverso

When the Mexican contestant was announced as the winner, tweets started emerging every second. This comment [es] [9] was posted by Alex Torres (@psicoloco), as he mentioned two of the most important national news: the upcoming celebration of the “Bicentenario” (celebrating 200 years of Mexican independence) and the new law that allows gay couples to adopt children:

“Bien! Tenemos #MissUniverso por 2da vez! Esto es para celebrar el #Bicentenario y las #BodasGay!”

“Good! We have #MissUniverso for the 2nd time! This is to celebrate the #Bicentenario and the #GayWeddings”

Another user, Gilberto Ruiz (@gilber7), expressed cynically [es] [10],

TENDREMOS NARCO! TENDREMOS VIOLENCIA!! NUESTRO GOBIERNO VALE MADREEEE!! PERO DE QUE SOMOS BONITOOOOOOS!!! LO SOMOS!!! #MissUniverso

WE MIGHT HAVE NARCO [drug trafficking]! WE MIGHT HAVE VIOLENCE!! OUR GOVERNMENT IS NOT THE BEST!! BUT IF THEY ASK US IF WE ARE BEAUTIFUL!!! WE ARE!!! #MissUniverso

As Navarrete was being crowned, other important events were taking place in the country. Just as Hugo Camacho (@hugocamacho) reported [es] [11]:

Mientras la MEXICANA estaba siendo coronada como la #MissUniverso un terremoto de magnitud 6,4 sacudió la costa oeste de México.

While the MEXICAN was being crowned as #MissUniverse an earthquake with a magnitud of 6.4, was shaking off Mexico's west coast

Mexico's National Seismological Service [12](SSN) confirmed this information.

Antuan Diaz (@antuan_diaz) mentioned [es] [13] Mexico's national football in this tweet:

11 hombres mexicanos de la selección no pudieron con la #WORLDCUP .. pero 1 sola mujer pudo con #MISSUNIVERSO Felicidades C:

11 Mexican men in the [football] team could not win the #WORLDCUP…but 1 woman alone could handle #MISSUNIVERSO. Congratulations C:

Faviola Martinez (@favyprincess), like many others, showed [es] [14]her excitement:

VAMOS por el MARIACHI y unos TEQUILAS para celebrar #MissUniverso

Let's get the MARIACHI and some TEQUILAS to celebrate #MissUniverso

By contrast, Zayra Alvarez (@zay_alvarez) commented [es] [15] on reactions to other situations where Mexicans are recognized around the world:

Cuando estudiantes del IPN o la UNAM ganan concursos mundiales de ciencia a todos les vale madres, pero no fuera #missuniverso porque ahí sí

When IPN or UNAM students (National Universities) win world science contests nobody cares, but if they were just like #missuniverso…

Finally, Miss Universe 2010 showed [es] [16] her enthusiasm through her personal Twitter account (@ximenaNR):

Gracias a todos …los amo!!!!! Los veo al rato!

Thank you everybody…I love you!!! I will see you soon!
