Bahraini Khalid Al Khayat posts [1] a letter on Facebook addressed to Works and Electricity Minister Dr Fahmi Al Jowder, inviting him to visit a local mosque in Hidd [2]and inspect its sorry state of affairs.
He writes (Ar):
Secondly, I was hoping that you would join us in prayer at the Northern Shanaf Mosque (formerly Sayed Haidar Mosque) in Hidd.. this town that has given the nation generations of ministers, teachers, doctors, engineers, journalists, officers and security personnel, who have never managed to stray away from submission or stage a demonstration, or a rally, or a protest of any type, even at the peak of our depression, when clergyman Shaikh Abdullatif Al Mahmood was arrested in 1991, upon his return from Kuwait.
Al Khayat continues:
And emphasises:
Even at the peak of our misery, caused by pollution, land reclamation and having just one road access to our town, even when the entrance to our town was removed and then returned, as if those inhabitants are not human beings, but creatures who move on two hooves, even after they have learned how to drive cars, and travel and study.
Despite all this, they have never known their way to such protests. Here, I will add the word unfortunately, which should precede the previous sentence.
Al Khayat recalls meeting the minister and warns him not to tag along any women ministers, should he visit the mosque:
I was honoured to meet you only once, in passing, outside Bahrain, and for five minutes. Despite this, I would like to invite you to pray in Hidd, in this mosque specifically. Please don't extend this invitation to any female minister to accompany you, as I will not be responsible if they lose their consciousness from what they will witness in this mosque.
He then tells us about what is happening at that mosque, and its sorry state of affairs:
There were merely four rows of worshipers, and that was during the Ishaa [4] prayers. After the prayers, the number dwindled to a row and a half, and I don't even know if anyone remained to pray the Taraweeh [5]prayers after the imam [6] or not. Do you want to know why?
I think you have understood what I wanted to say!
Al Khayat continues:
And adds:
Once again, I hope you would come and pray in this mosque, or hut, or call it whatever you want, and after that, let your public relations department at your ministry respond and blame what is happening on peak loads.
Al Khayat concludes his letter with his full name, contact number and address saying:
