Colombia: Twitter Reactions to the Colombian Bicentennial and its Google Doodle

Categories: Latin America, Colombia, Governance, History, Politics, War & Conflict

On July 20, Colombia celebrates [1] 200 years of the declaration of independence [2] and the start of the wars [3] which ended August 7, 1819, when the then New Granada [4]achieved [5] its definitive independence from Spain.

In the early hours of the day, some Colombian Twitter users reacted to Google's commemorative Doodle [7], featured [es] [8] on Google's Colombia home page [es] [9]. The logo was designed [10] by 14-year-old Yennifer Valderrama, depicting [es] [11] “a Spanish ship leaving our islands and the Colombian flag driven into one of them as a sign of freedom.”

am i wrong? but google's do[o]dle looks more like the discovery of the Americas

@VeelaLatina [13]

That doodle would fit better if today was October 12, 2012

@Vivian_Vanegas [14]

#epicfail

I can't stop looking at Google's Doodle… it looks like a conquest logo and not an #independence one … #epicfail

@yiraplaza [15]

Today's Google Doodle looks more like an apology of colonization than the alleged independence we celebrate today #bicentennial

@rolita99 [16]

Google's Doodle is so cool, drawn by a 14-year-old Colombian girl #bicentennial

@nicvel [17]

And Google's Doodle reminds me more about the Independence of Cartagena [18], 11 November 1811, than the Santafé tantrum, 20 July 2010

@vtooto [19]

is what that girl painted on Google's Doodle the Panama Channel?

Other users tweeted their thoughts and their views regarding the commemoration:

Today that country of the pocket historiography, the flag turned into a handle, the card-made sombrero vueltiao [21] and the ‘tropical pop’ is celebrating.

@MaisAngel [22]

If you love the country you are from, having a critical attitude, which not necessarily is a fault-finding one, is the best you can do to contribute.

@jorgetobon [23]

Celebrating the #bicentennial is not supporting the Uribe administration, so those claiming they don't feel Colombian don't confuse [the two].

@paitocp [24]

You've already been told that today is not a day for criticizing, but don't pretend to be patriots either yelling for everyone to hear “Colombia is so beautiful,” you hypocrites.

@JuanKmesa [25]

The problem is that we Colombians believe we're the most awesome, and that won't let us accept that there are problems to solved #Bicentennial

@juaneslewin [26]

My [timeline] is hopping mad because of the #bicentennial. Today I don't see anywhere the so-called national unity Íngrid Betanc[o]ur[t] created [27].

@ElReticente [28]

I remind all of you shutting us up or inviting us to leave the country, that the independence was achieved thanks to nonconformist people #bicentennial

@jovelezva [29]

It's 200 years of history of a Motherland you and I build every day, our wish for a better future put us together HAPPY BICENTENNIAL

@OkimXD [30]

Colombia = Passion [31], TwitterColombia = DRAMA! Not even TODAY drama eases off…

@tintaimpresa [32]

Actually I don't feel comfortable with any military power demonstrations. Their planes are very nice… but I don't want them close by

@machecor [33]

To know that so many parades, so many Tucanos and so much stuff looks like toys at the side of the tanks, Sukhois, and F16 our neighbours have…

@leidymarmalade [34]

The history of all the bad things they've done to us may be the same history of how weak we have been.
