Sri Lanka: Forgetting Those Killed

Sanjana Hattotuwa at ICT for Peacebuilding (ICT4Peace) points out that “post-war Sri Lanka is very far from a just peace, or meaningful reconciliation” as the celebrations of the victory over the LTTE did not include commemoration of the loved ones killed during the war.

  • There is not much to celebrate. Celebrations itself may divide communities again. Thousands of lives were lost and many thousands disabled / displaced.

What is important is to identify causes of conflict and address them sooner than later. Though We liked the crushing of LTTE, since there was no other option available, celebrations give a bitter taste.

In anycase, WAR victories shouldnt be celebrated but memorised since it is a event of despair for some.

Governments may want to score politically by these events but A Main character behind the action was not allowed to participate. Ultimately it looked a joke.
