Armenia: Journalist arrested in Liberty Square

Ianyan covers the case of Ani Gevorgyan, an anti-government journalist who was arrested on 31 May while being among opposition supporters who resisted attempts by police to remove them from a newly reopened public space in Yerevan, the Armenian capital. The blog says that while the reasons for Gevorgyan's arrest remain unclear, opposition media and bloggers believe her detention might be linked to two articles ridiculing the Chief of the Armenian police. The Committee to Protect Journalists has already issued a statement raising its concerns while Unzipped weighs in with its thoughts on official attempts to let opposition activists make use of the area somewhat ironically called Liberty Square.
