Bangladesh: FIFA World Cup, Memories From The Past

Football or soccer, as is it called in some parts of the world, is undoubtedly the greatest game mankind has ever invented. The FIFA World Cup is the most widely-viewed sporting event in the world. Bangladesh is one rare country where during the World Cup people actively identify with and support a country that they otherwise have no connection to. And their favorites? ‘Argentina’ or ‘Brazil’ and you will see flags of those countries hoisted by the supporters on their rooftops.

Within a couple of weeks 2010 FIFA word cup will start in South Africa and the Bangladeshi bloggers are discussing about this mega event. The storm in a teacup is the supporters’ analysis of whether their team will be winning the world cup or not. In addition, a few blogger are also reminiscing about the memorable moments of the previous World Cups.

In Bangla (Bengali) blogging platform Somewherein, Mamu shares his memories of the 1982 World Cup :

In 1982, Bangladesh Television (government owned and the only TV channel during that time) started to telecast world cup matches live for the first time. I was a kid then, but I remember that matches used to start at midnight. People of our neighborhood used to gather in our house to watch the matches. The TV set used to be brought to the yard of our house and the audience were divided into two teams. Winners used to go home dancing with joyous slogans and the loser used to return home with a sad face.

He also added:

“Our television set was black and white, but that was the most colorful World Cup I ever saw”.

The Bangladeshi fans are very crazy. Mamu also shares a story of the 1990 World Cup:

1990 is the year when Argentina met Germany in the final of the World Cup. Germany Beat Argentina to claim the trophy. In the final match many people criticized the decisions of the referee. The Bangladeshi supporters of Argentina did not like this lightly and one of them sued the match referee Codesal in a local court.

Mamu informed us that religion also created supporters: Italian player Roberto Baggio is a Buddhist, that is why the Buddhist of Bangladesh supported Italy in the 1994 world cup:

1994 was a year where world cup created a different dimension in Bangladesh. Most of the Bangladeshis usually support Brazil or Argentina. But the people who lived in Cox’sbazar or nearby supported Italy that year only because of Roberto Baggio. Baggio is a Buddhist and he donated some money to renovate a Pagoda in the Cox’sbazar Area.

Not only religion but also one other factor gathered support for Italy:

Not only the Buddhists of our country supported Italy, one of our glamorous actresses of that time supported Italy, because the players of Italian national football team were very handsome (Viva Italia!).

Alas! all their prayers and wishes did not materialize, as Brazil beat Italy in the final. Baggio missed a crucial penalty and Italy lost the cup.

In that blog post Nasiruddin Hojja commented with this title, ‘how world cup football created impact in our country’s profession and politics’:

I can remember one thing about the 1982 world cup. I lived in a small town and near my house there was a slum. Some of those poor people were profession thieves. That was the first time people were awake after midnight to watch the world cup. For this reason it became very tough for the the thieves to carry out their professional work. One day when I was returning from the school, I heard that they were chanting slogans against the Bangladesh government “stop broadcasting world cup at midnight”.

Though World Cup was a bad omen for the thieves of Bangladesh, it was a blessing for the police, especially as the matches were telecast after midnight.

The Word Cup and its superstars were also used by politicians, adds Nasiruddin:

We saw the World Cup and its superstars being used as a political tool. In 1990 World Cup Argentina lost the final match to Germany. Argentine superstar Diego Maradona could not accept the result and he broke into tears after the final. Many Bangladeshi supporters cried for him too. As Maradona was a immensely popular figure to the Bangladeshis, a vice president of the autocratic government during that time announced that the government was bringing Maradona to Bangladesh. Later one Bangladeshi Journalist asked Maradona about his journey to Bangladesh and this superstar simply asked where Bangladesh was? The whole story was a lie and it was meant for gaining political mileage.

Nadia Chowdhury Dina remembers her experience:

During the 1986 World Cup I was a child and my father used to wake us up to watch the matches. I knew nothing about the game but when my father cried ‘Goal!’ we siblings used to cry out loud too. One of the reasons to wake up to watch the games was to brag about it in the school although most of the time we went to bed soon soon after waking up.
