Bangla blogs: Grieving for Haiti and Lessons Learned

As Haiti struggles in the aftermath of the devastating earthquake that has brought in its wake unimaginable loss to life, property and infrastructure, Bangla bloggers have joined the rest of the world in grieving for Haiti and gearing up to lend a helping hand.

The header on the community blog Amarblog reads as follows:

We express our deepest sympathies for the distressed people of Haiti

“How can we help?” This is a topic being discussed in many Bangla forums and blog posts such as these: 1, 2, 3.

At the same time, blogger Salim6251 also warns netizens to be cautious when donating money online as they could become prey to scams.

Shikkhanobish writes in a blog post at Sachalayatan:

…For the time-being we must all forget our differences and stand beside Haiti. Not for political stability, not for cultural freedom – now is the time to fight for and re-establish their very fundamental Right to Live. Let the people of Haiti, existing on the brink of life and death, not find themselves alone.

In a touching poem, blogger Naharmonica expresses her anguish at the colossal damage that the earthquake has unleashed on Haiti.

When did this world become a habitat of men?
The palace quakes at the fury of the Earth, schools are smothered,
A child is flung from its mother's breast –
blood trickling, serpentine, from torn flesh.

At the same time, some of the bloggers also discussed and debated the lessons learned from the Haiti disaster.

Aditya at the community blog from West Bengal – Coffeehouser Adda rues:

Haiti! You have left us all very worried…if such a time comes for us, how will we protect our mushrooming, overcrowded towns and cities? Perhaps it is already too late. Now the Earth will no longer listen to our pleas. We are at her mercy. At her slightest whim, the world can become either a drought-ridden desert or a frozen land of ice. Her slightest desire to stretch will leave billions of people, including us, vulnerable to great catastrophe…where will we go?

Sheikh Nazrul wonders what kind of preparedness Bangladesh can show to mitigate natural calamities so as to avoid a fate similar to Haiti. He offers some suggestions to this effect.

Since Bangladesh has been currently earmarked as being in the seismic zone, we need to take urgent, proactive steps to raise public awareness and our level of preparedness. At the same time, we need to take steps to mitigate disaster by strictly following building codes when designing houses and high-rises. Since we cannot predict the severity of a possible earthquake, there is no alternative to educating the public about safe living, preparedness and emergency response. Of course, we need to be ever prepared to be able to respond quickly to a disaster, in case it does take place.

Blogger Faruk Wasif at Muktangan agrees. He writes:

What has happened in Haiti, it could happen in Dhaka too. Dhaka and Chittagong lay in the seismic zone. Dhaka comes next after Tehran in the list of earthquake-prone cities. The houses in Dhaka, though not as flimsy as those in Haiti are nevertheless not built to be earthquake- resistant… and that is perhaps why the disaster in Haiti are not something distant – the reverberations of the death toll can be felt in Dhaka as well.
