And the best country in the world is….

Yesterday, Lova Rakotomala from Madagascar sent an email to the internal Global Voices mailing list pointing out a new reader survey by The Economist to nominate the “best country in the world”. He suggested we (Global Voices bloggers and readers) should submit countries that are usually left out of this kind of ranking. While The Economist have already unilaterally decided that Somalia is “the worst country on Earth”, it seems they are still entertaining a conversation about who should be nominated as “the best”.

Then we thought: “The Economist doesn't know everything!” Few of us love countries based on stability, wealth, global fame or any of the metrics such a publication is fond of. So, dear readers: please nominate below who you think is the best country and why. Whoever offers the best reason (as unilaterally decided by our jury) will win a Putumayo CD of African Reggae. I will mail it myself!

  • Perú! best food in the world, even chileans accept that!

    Peru has 84 of the 103 existing ecosystems and 28 of the 32 climates on the planet!

    The history of Peru spans several millennia.. it has old cultures and empires still to be fully discovered..

    And some of the more beautful women in the wolrd!!!!

  • I vote for Ecuador. We have an old libertarian tradition, anyone can say or do anything, and the biodiversity is great. Also we have the Galapagos Islands, a small part of the Amazonas Rainforest, Great vulcanos with perpetual snow, and so….

  • If you ask a Tunisian “how do you spell censorship?”, he may answer you: B.E.N.A.L.I !

    Such contribution to human kind, a new word much easier to spell than that ugly one “censorship”, would give à large advance to Tunisia :)

    Sorry for all those who are already out :) :)

    I vote for Malaysia:-
    Great people
    Amazing country, a lot to do.
    Amazing water parks
    Everything is reasonably priced
    They really managed to have a diverse country without severe ethnic tensions

  • I would like to nominate three countries very close to my heart:

    1. Mexico – the country which thought me true meaning of forgiveness;

    2. Hungary – where it’s an obligation to ensure everyone in your company feels good and happy; where people are really good in talking about their feelings;

    3. Kazakhstan – first country which thought me the custom according to which one cannot finish first visit in your house without receiving a small present, meaning there are welcome any time.

  • […] Zweden of … Nederland. Het interblog Global Voices verzet zich echter tegen deze lijst en roept haar kosmopoliete publiek het beste land te kiezen met verrassend resultaten: Madagaskar “omdat de spinnen er de mooiste zijde maken”, […]

  • definitely Syria, especially the western part, the mountains, the lakes, and the sea, plus the very nice people there.

  • The best country in the world is Germany for reasons of its peaceful scientific developments and valuing its people by keeping them in good health.

    Best country in the world: Cuba.
    Safe to live in and visit, extremely nice weather and beautiful landscape. Warm and friendly people eager to help, and, of course, a remarkable history with a dying de facto president and a pupett president on power. Seriouly, Cuba is by far the best country, and the future of Cuba will be beautiful. (once we get rid of some bugs).
