Qatar: Kingdom, Sultanate, Emirate?

Marjorie in Qatar asks, “Is there any real difference between a kingdom, a sultanate, and an emirate?”

I’m wondering the same thing. Recent news articles have referred to Bahrain as an emirate but it’s a kingdom! Emir in Arabic means “prince”. The UAE is a collection of emirates and is not a kingdom. Only Oman is a Sultanate (sultan meaning “authority”) but I don’t know how that’s different from a king. Can’t wait to figure it out.
