“What is African drama?,” blogger Anne Manyara asks. “Is it any kind of drama, as long as the cast is African? A play written by an African? A play written by anyone, as long is it is about African issues? Or is it a play performed in a venue with an African name, like Bomas of Kenya?”

African theatre has always existed, like all of theatre itself. African drama, to out it briefly, originated with the advent of colonialism. So look for any book that covers the introduction of western styled drama into Africa as a result of colonial incursion. Like “Drama and Theatre in Nigeria” by Yemi Ogunbiyi or “West African Popular Theatre” by Karin, Barber and Collins.
