Morocco: “We Are All Gaza”

Rabat is 2,393 miles away from Gaza as the crow flies, but that doesn't stop Moroccans from feeling a strong sense of solidarity with Palestinians.  As Israel's attacks against Gaza continue to worsen, Morocco's bloggers continue to speak out.

Hicham of Al Miraat, who has posted the image below, reminds us that we are all Gaza and makes this statement, in a separate post:

On ideological grounds I’m not a supporter of Hamas, but like it or not, these are the people who the Palestinians chose to lead them. After all, Hamas has always been cleaner than Fatah (its main political rival) and had a much better record in respecting the democratic process in Palestine since its inception. And this democratic choice was the natural result of years of Israeli systematic humiliations, harassment, disdain for whomsoever claims leadership, and of course political assassinations and state terror.

When in the 50’s, 60’s, 70’s and even during the 80’s, most of Palestinian militants were secular and mostly fighting a “conventional” war of liberation (i.e. not targeting civilians, and avoiding terror tactics -except the exceptions-), Israel responded with the same brutality and pushed the Palestinians little by little to the extreme.

Eatbees, an honorary member of the Moroccan blogosphere who is currently residing in the U.S., posts a devastating photo and remarks:

Like many, I feel sad about what’s been happening in Gaza over the past few days.

This sadness turns to anguish when I read the one-sided coverage in the American media, which never wavers from Israel’s “right to defend itself” and blames Hamas even for civilian casualties.

For the issues and arguments, I’ll defer to Palestinian leader Mustafa Barghouthi, who knows what he’s talking about.

It seems like the war will continue for many more days and weeks. I wish Israel a similar outcome to their 2006 adventure in Lebanon.

The View From Fez reports that Moroccan demonstrators were out in full force:

There have been two recent sets of demonstrations, each over very different issues. Yesterday Moroccans in the main cities staged sit-ins condemning the Israeli raids on Gaza. Both Moroccan and Palestinian flags were carried, as thousands of demonstrators expressed their solidarity with the Palestinian people.

Mohamed el Alami puts out a call for peace on his blog:

THE Palestinian population is severeley suffering. The Israelis killed mens ,womens, childrens….why do Israel is doing it? he cannot realize all his objectves because violence produce violence. Unfortuneteley the peace itisnt here now ,but yes war ,carnage, destruction ,disaster…
I hope that there will a cease fire ,because civilians are suffreing seriuoseley.
We need peace no war ,no violence no egoism.
Ghaza ,we are with you.

As Hicham reminds us:

The Serial Killers who have planned the mass murder of Gazans: Ehud Olmert, Ehud Barak, Tzipi Livni, Mahmoud Abbas and Hosni Mubarak. There is strong evidence. What is the way to bring them to justice?

(US involvement: under investigation. Yes, US arms were used).

Arab countries should, and must, open their borders for free trade between them, and make one economic block, and adopt a single arab currency, and sell their oil with that currency, and then, and only then, they can hope to make pressure on the U.S. and E.U.which in turn they can make pressure on Israel to give back all the rights to the palestinians. but this is still a dream, isn’t?

I’m sure that the Maroccon people are deeply feeling with the Palestinians. But it is very clear to me that “the Palace” is only feeling “solidarity” in their propaganda. In reality Marocco is one of the best friends of Israel (and the USA). The Palace knows how to play with the honest feeling of the inhabitants of Marocco… Many high-wing advisers of the King are having an Israeli passport, no problem! Marocco occupies Western-Sahara, Israel occupies Palestine. The wall in Western Sahara was constructed by Israel: they made a lot of money with it.

I ask Maroccans who have access to international information to disregard the propaganda and to look for real facts. Not an aesy job.

    @Fennie Stavast

    Stop saying such absurdities
the jewish advisor, you’re talking about, doesn’t have an israeli passport. a week ago, a minister who got the Spanish passeport has been sacked.
Western Sahara has always been part of morocco, I remind that you we’re celebrating 12th century of the modern morocco. algeria, tunisia, Mauritania never existed as sovereign nations before the European colonization in the 20th century and the end of the ottoman empire. The sovereign morocco back to the 8th century has had its border from southern Mali to the north of spain.

    @ Sympathy.
    Thanks for your reaction.
On both items I asked you to look for reliable information. You just answer the “Palace”-refrain.
I know, it’s difficult, if you are all the time in the same desinformation-circle.

    1. Marocco – Israel
I’m not talking of one adviser. I’m talking of many economic relations.

    2. Marocco-Democratic Arabic Republic Sahara.
It’s bloody nonsence you talk. The forming of states is complicated stuff, but there never was a souvereign Marocco as you described, whatever you celebrated.
The International Court of Justice in The Hague concluded (and I know the report was falsified by the Palace-propganda) that the region of Western Sahara has never been a part of “a ” Marocco. Yes, there were trade-relations and that’s it.
I know that a minister who got a spanisch pasport is sacked. I think, maybe, it had something to do with a recent international report on the sad status of Human Rights related to the Saharawi living under Maroccan occupation.
When Marooco got independance it denied the USA the free use of military airports (on the way to whatever middle-east destiny they needed to refuel). They were reopened a the moment Richard Nixon promisssed to disregard international law, with gives the Saharawi right to selfdeterminaton.
I do not know from what time the close relations with Israel date.

    @ Fannie Stavast,

Your are mischaracterizing our country and his leadership. Your comment looks more a polisario anti-Moroccan propaganda than an unbiaised opinion.
I want to thank our great king Mohamed VI and his team for the colossal work they’re accomplishing daily to develop Morocco in every aspect of life.
    I won’t be influenced by your opinion.Pffffft!!!

  • Fennie Stavast

    XOXO
I don’t ask Maroccans to be influenced by opinions, I ask Maroccons (with access to internet) to look for reliable information.

I can not know if Mohammed VI would like to be an honest person, I DO know that the-palace-circle decides what role he can play… The marvellous relations with Israel are clear.

  • malika

Fennie Stavast@ why don’t you leave us moroccans alone with your separatist stuff? We’re talking about Gaza here and Israel’s agressive policy against civilians. I think you’re the one who’s making propaganda here: this is global voices “morocco” not western sahara!
