Philippines: Kumusta or How Are You

Don’t English Me, I’m not School muses on the usage of the word kumusta, a Filipino greeting which means “How are you?”

Kumusta is a “Filipino” derivative to the Spanish “Como estas” which would apparently make “Kumusta ka” quite redundant with the word “you” (ka) since “you” would already be in “kumusta.”

Tagalog + localized Spanish and English words + token inclusion of seldom used words from limited selection of local languages = “Filipino.” That’s the sad state of what is considered to be the Philippines’ national language.

  • oh yes, now I remember como estas. I almost forgot about that. Thanks for the reminder.
