Egypt: 89% of Youth Support Internet Censorship Law

Eighty-nine per cent of Egyptian young men and women surveyed recently stated that they are in favour of an Internet censorship law. Bloggers Times [1] shares the most recent statistics on Egyptian internet users in this post (Ar):

أظهر استطلاع لمركز المعلومات ودعم اتخاذ القرار حول استخدامات الشباب للانترنت أن 74% من الشباب يستخدمونه للاطلاع على الاخبار سواء بصورة دائمة أو أحيانا ، وأن 68% يستخدمونه فى تحميل الاغانى والافلام والبرامج والالعاب سواء بصورة دائمة أو أحيانا.
وكشف أن أكثر من نصف الشباب حوالى 58% من مستخدمى الكمبيوتر وأن 36% منهم يملكون كمبيوتر بالمنزل ، كما تبين أن 52% من مستخدمى الكمبيوتر يستخدمون الانترنت.
وعن رأى الشباب فى الانترنت وثقتهم به وافق كل الشباب بالعينة الذين يستخدمون الانترنت على أنه يسهل الحصول على المعلومات ، فيما يرى 98% أنه يصل العالم ببعضه ..
كماوافق غالبية الشباب حوالى 82% منهم على أن الانترنت قد يعرض البعض لصداقات أو علاقات غير موثوق فيها.
كما أظهر الاستطلاع أن 72% من الشباب فى العينة يعتبرون أن الانترنت يشكل خطرا عليهم ، فيما رأى 71% منهم أنه يشكل خطرا على الاطفال ، بينما يرى 43% منهم أن الانترنت يقلل من الترابط الاسرى كما كشف الاستطلاع أن 89% من الشباب يوافقون على وضع قانون يتحكم فى محتويات الانترنت.
وبالنسبة لرأى الشباب فى المدونات ، أظهر 58% منهم أنهم سمعوا عن المدونات من خلال الاهل والاصدقاء وأن 37% منهم سمعوا عنها لاول مرة منذ أقل من 6 أشهر ، كما أن كل ثلاثة أفراد من الشباب بالعينة لديهم مدونات خاصة بهم.
وفيما يتعلق بمتوسط عدد ساعات استخدام الشباب للانترنت أوضح الاستطلاع أن 50% من الشباب بالعينة يستخدمون الانترنت سواء بشكل يومى أو اسبوعى ومتوسط استخدامهم له أقل من عشر ساعات ، كما أن 20% منهم متوسط استخدامهم الاسبوعى يتراوح بين 10 إلى أقل من 20 ساعة.
يشار إلى أن نتائج الاستطلاع تعتمد على بيانات المبحوثين من الشباب من سن 18 إلى 35 عاما وقد تم استطلاع 1338 مبحوثا.
جدير بالذكر أن عدد مستخدمى الانترنت ارتفع من 65ر0 مليون نسمة عام 2000 إلى 17ر9 مليون نسمة عام 2008.
A survey conducted by the Egyptian Information and Decision Support Center on how Egyptian youth uses the internet found that:
74% of those surveyed use the internet to stay up to date with recent and current news, whether regularly or occasionally.
68% use it to download songs, movies, programs, or games, whether regularly or occasionally.
58% of the Egyptian youth population use computers and 36% own one at home.
52% of computer users are Internet literate.
98% of the sample agree that the Internet makes most information accessible and they feel that they have become connected to the rest of the world.
82% of Internet users agreed that internet relationships and friendships are not trustworthy.
72% consider the Internet has a bad influence on themselves.
71% think the Internet is dangerous for children.
43% believe that the Internet has negatively impacted family ties.
89% agree to having a law in place that monitors/censors Internet content.
58% heard of blogs through family and friends.
37% have heard of blogs for the first time in the last six months.
One in every three people in the sample has a blog.
50% use the Internet daily and their average time online is less than 10 hours daily.
20% use the internet weekly and their average time online is between 10 to 20 hours.
The sample featured 1,338 young Egyptians between the ages of 18 and 35. It is also worth noting that the number of internet users in Egypt increased from 650,000 users in 2000 to 9,170,000 users in 2008.
