China: Will a Nobel Peace Prize really hurt our feelings?

It couldn't have been all so bad when Gao Xingjian was awarded the Nobel prize in Literature in 2000; Zhu Rongji congratulated the former Chinese citizen at the time, and Wikipedia maintains that his winning the Nobel Prize in its 100th anniversary year is a happy occasion for Chinese literature, even with his works having been banned in China.

Now in 2008 that Hu Jia is rumored to be a top contender for this year's Nobel Peace Prize, the news was at least reported, although quickly harmonized away, leaving just those which bear Liu Jianchao‘s harmonious talking point that a Nobel Peace Prize for Hu will without doubt hurt the feelings of the Chinese people, and just the rumor of it already has.

The relevant Anti-CNN post, using a Deutsche Welle report, still stands; some comments:

“诺贝尔和平奖”已经成了一个笑话。囧

The Nobel “Peace” Prize is just a joke now.

Now, it's whoever that's the most fiercely anti-China that gets Nobel Peace Prizes. This prominent international award, controlled by Western countries, sure gets aimed around a lot. China wants to rise up and look how hard we have it. Jiayou, motherland; the more they try and do stuff like this, the more united we should be.

Too angry? More like severely despising! Let those stupid c***s do whatever they want.

Truly despicable…
If you call this peace, then all I see is more hypocrisy…

The Nobel Prize has deviated! It's become the anti-China prize now! What a joke!

Is it worth even responding to this? Just make sure you don't forget it. Didn't the Dalai Lama win it 20 years ago? It was him that was behind the Lhasa riots this year, stirring things up with his big mouth.

Really makes you wonder, have the Nobel Peace Prize judges been castrated or what? How could they be so preposterous??!!

Nobel Peace Prize=Plot to Subvert the Government Prize?

Those Westerners really are just fooling themselves! On one hand they fantasize about China coming to rescue their markets, and on the other hand go and tell China what to do and how to do it. Do they really think us Chinese are so easy to bully around?

And from the more influential message board Paowang, comments on the Liu Jianchao ‘hurt feelings’ statement:

Is this representative of the Chinese public opinion? This post seem rather biased to me. What of the people who genuinely happy for the achievement of their countryman regardless of his anti-CCP stance? Do they delete those comments right away?

  • There was a fair amount written about this by the big names at Bullog all of which seemed pretty positive. Aside from that, all I’ve seen is a translation at YeeYan (link) and the first few comments could be described as the kind of bashing one can predict with a fairly high degree of certainty. Zhou “Zuola” Shuguang shows up and offers those guys a raise to 1 yuan per comment if they’ll start saying nice things about Hu Jia, and then the comments from there on down are more technical and somewhat off-topic. Zan Aizong wrote a longer piece on his blog, but I honestly haven’t seen anything more than that.

well, i dont believe people at Anti-cnn know who hujia is….
i still get chill although i know well what kind website anti-cnn is….

  • yeah right, your phony indignation of “get chill…” ain’t gonna hack it. why don’t you put attention to the chinese reporter who was fired by DW-TV because of her fair and balanced reporting.

  • Wasn’t Hu Jia advocating for good changes and more human rights and freedom? I don’t think he did wrong things and the CCP just hates him because they are against human rights and freedoms. So why do these Chinese commentors take CCPs side and say that Hu is anti China? Can’t someone criticize the government be pro China? Doesn’t Hu Jia’s wishes for change reflect his love for China and Chinese people? Will The masses side with the CCP no matter what even if the CCP is bad for the country and people? Why is it considered anti China to exercise democratic freedom of thought and express opinion and wish for evolution and civilized society?

I think the Chinese people should not keep digging a hole to support the CCP, they should evolve and support their countrymen who stand up and voice their opinion because that is great for the evolution of society, opinions need to be shared, not just the one opinion dictated by the propaganda department. If I was Chinese I would be proud of Hu Jia, even though the government is against him. CCP does not equal China, dignity and humanity is Chinas culture and civilization, not silencing opinions and persecuting thinkers.

these anti-cnn fellas are so ignorant beyond belief. do they ever take a step back and have a look at china’s political system and actually wonder why there is so much western criticism? you just cant argue with people that cant seem to separate their party loyalty with genuine patriotism. i am sick to death of these ‘anti-cnn’ crowd claiming ‘anti-china’ when its clearly anti-ccp or anti-chinese political system. when the heck are they going to realise that? even blind patriotism has its limits.

CCP has the support of overwhelming majority youth, most of them a well educated and the most active components on the web, blogs, BBS, while the generation of their parents and grandparents are tend to be more critical of the government. Hu Jia is a great activist. I don’t thing he is anti-CCP, let alone anti-China. He deserves recognition for his activities. On the other hand, Noble Peace Price’s decision on awarding the price sometimes is clearly targeting something else. Western media’ bias and hostility is by far the single biggest factor (other than China’s economic prosperity in last 20 years) pushing the Chinese youth who are the beneficiaries of economic boom, to take CCP/government’s stance.

  • Jimmy, don’t get your shorts in a know, it seems like these people are so dumb, but actually a lot of them are just party shills, they are CCP people trolling the net making it look like people think such and such a way, trying to pass off their brand of fabricated faux logic.

The youth in China are raised without culture, they are raised on absolute materialism, so they will easily sell out for money (not all) and they have been raised on lies and false history. They did not live through the Cultural Revolution and other psycho campaigns and what they hear about the recent history is fabricated by the party, the party pervades everything, trying to change the truth and it’s not too hard to pull off on these modern youth whose parents are not even all too clear and who are too broken and afraid to teach their children culture and truth.

I think that truth in China would greatly solve the whole issue of these people who defend and love the party and believe the party is above them and their country. If CNN and other media knew how to report on China… They should do a much better job, but it’s like they don’t know how important this is… They say this and that but seem not to really want to help China and Chinese people.
