The flying saucer houses in Sanchih (Taipei County) have been abandoned for more than 30 years. They appeared in the newspaper two months ago. It was reported that the owner of these abandoned houses and the creditor bank had a new agreement. The government of Taipei County will tear down these flying saucer houses to build new resorts for a beachside recreational park, along with the beach nearby.

Lynn was one of the people who were amazed by these interesting and special houses.

This is wonderful. I'm thrilled to see this image. First, I just love the architecture for its complete difference. I hope you'll forgive me for saying this, but when I was a kid, growing up in Australia, I used to watch an American cartoon show called the Jetsons. It was extremely futuristic and these buildings really remind me of it; of what we might have thought in the '60s that we'd be living in by the 21st century. Secondly, it's an absolutely beautiful image. The colours are delicate yet still have a certain strength to them. The reflection helps to strengthen the palette. I just can't believe that this has been abandoned. I really hope that it is preserved.

Because the flying saucer houses are so special, avant proposed that we should preserve them as a national historic monument.

It is a pity if we tear down these houses. I think the Council for Culture Affair should preserve these houses as national historic monument. These flying saucer houses, as the Chiang-Kai-Shek Memorial, were built in 1970s…They are very special architectures. We can observe how architects tried to free themselves from the mainstream palace-like buildings. On the other hand, at the end of 1970, Taiwan just overcame the challenge of oil crisis and embraced the economic growth. Taiwanese finally had more income and higher life quality. The presence of the flying saucer houses as resorts shows that people in those days had some money to spend on new and fancy activities as other people in developed countries. As a result, through these flying saucer houses, we can learn how people lived thought 30 years ago.

If you are interested, Marta Michałowska and Fabian Sowiński provided some background architecture information about the flying saucer houses.
