Cuba: Role of the Media

As one Havana-based blogger, Circles Robinson, is optimistic about Cuban media charting a new course, another, Yoani Sanchez, criticizes the media's complacency in reporting on issues like domestic violence: “How can a woman, who flees home to avoid the fists of her husband, know how to find a refuge where she can spend the night if not through information in the media…”

  • In recent years the Cuban media has done a great deal to begin to openly talk about domestic violence on the island.

Here’s a feature in the sex and relationships column of the second-largest circulation daily newspaper in Cuba, JUVENTUD REBELDE, from December 2006. Please make this available to your readers. Thanks.

  • Why does Global Voices support HavanaTimes.org which is run by Cuban government agents?

I see you are a recommended site there so you must have been cleared by the Cuban government.

Funny how you have GlobalVoices Advocacy for defending free speech online. By supporting the Cuban government controlled HavanaTimes.org you are insulting your free speech advocacy since free speech in Cuba is not tolerated.

Now I see you criticize Yoani Sanchez?

Shame on GlobalVoices. Apparently your Advocacy program is a farce.

  • Rob Sequin, I think you have misread the post above which is a direct quote from Yoani’s blog criticizing media complacency on domestic violence. I think a commitment to freedom of expression also entails a lot of listening, and that’s what we encourage people to do. Global Voices links to a wide range of different views and perspectives. You are mistaken if you think linking to a site is the same as supporting it, and certainly we have no control over who links to us.

  • Fair enough but you cannot compare Circles Robinson and Yoani Sanchez as Havana based bloggers.

Circles Robinson works for the Cuban government but refuses to admit it therefore he lying to his readers.

I won’t post the link here but if you go to my site, you can see the proof.

  • I’ll check your site. I agree it’s important to be critical of all sources, but I think it’s also important to listen with an open mind when someone puts forth an thoughtful argument. People tend to return the favor, and dialogue on Cuba is certainly something we need more of.

    Best, Solana
