Korea: Fan Death and Your Belief

There is a myth that has been handed down from generation to generation in Korea. “The fan death.” If you sleep with a fan on in an airtight room, you might die. When I was a kid, adults around me always warned that I should not close the door and leave the fan on during sleep because I might die. It is like a summer horror story. Sometimes newspapers report in summer that people died in an airtight room and there was a fan which was on and next to the person. After I grew up, friends – non-Koreans – mocked my belief and I got to doubt that it might not be possible.

Wiki mentioned ‘Fan Death’ as an urban legend that originated in South Korea, and bloggers talk about the legend.

But it is still hard to erase what you have believed in your whole life.

Yesterday, KBS (a Korean broadcaster) showed an experiment that people don’t die even though the fan is on while they sleep, and it gained attention from many people. It is really difficult to change the existing belief, so they did the experiment. Even though some scholars pointed out the wrong belief, it seems that people just take it as the truth.

Then why did some people die with the fan or AC on?

The fact that some people could die due to the low temperature, to the vacuous air, and the lack of the oxygen while the fan is on sounds scientific, but it is not. Even this year, some newspapers and TV clarified this several times. Then why is there still news that some people died with the fan on? Including medical doctors who experienced autopsies of those dead people, many scholars said that it happened at the same time by chance. Most of them had diseases, such as myocardial infarction, cerebral hemorrhage, cerebral infarction, and pulmonary embolism. Regardless of these people’s opinions, it was not enough to change the belief. Through media, there have been 10-20 cases of the fan death every year, even this year[…] Last year, the Korean Consumer Agency even mentioned that one of the five safety measures is not to turn the fan on and many media warned of the danger. So it would be natural that people think like that.

What do you think about the ‘fan murderer’? There is news that we see every summer. It is a story that some people died during sleeping in an airtight room with an operating fan. Do you believe this news report? Even though we don’t believe it, I am sure that you have heard your parents and friends warning you. For example, they say, ‘If you would like to sleep with the fan operating, don’t sleep facing your face to the fan and make sure that the window is open.’ No matter whether we believe or not, we follow what they recommend. The evidence that we could die due to the fan is known as ‘death from suffocation’ and ‘hypothermic shock.’ And sometimes, falling asleep after getting drunk is a reason. Therefore, they can’t find the change of their body temperature. Mostly, the body re-acts to the change of the surrounding circumstances. A surprising thing is that this belief of the fan death is within Korea.

#If fans are as dangerous as we believe, there should some strong regulations. But there is no one who dies due to fans in other countries. Then we should suspect what we generally believe. If there was real death due to fans, how could the fan-making company survive in Korea that has lawsuits as many as in the USA? The problem of our country is that professionals like doctors as well as ordinary people and media seem to believe it. It is like the reproduction of groundless fact.[…]

Sometimes what we believe without any questioning might not be true. Therefore, we should check at least one time whether what we believe so naturally is really true or not.

Regardless of it, I would like to recommend opening the windows when you sleep with the fan in summer. As a matter of fact, sleeping while drunk in the hot summer is such a dangerous behavior (maybe the drunken people even don’t have sense to open the window). It doesn’t matter whether you have a fan or not. Even when you use the fan, place it near your feet, and so your face is not going to be swollen the next day.[…]

Another analysis here.

No matter what is true, I feel more comfortable to sleep without the fan. And it causes headaches. Everyday, many people die of illness and of natural causes. In summer, there are just some people who sleep with the fan on. […] What I am curious is whether North Koreans believe this too or not.[…] From when did this story start? Every summer, media always talks about ‘fan death.’ When did we start using fans in common? Since the fast growth of the 1970s, this fan death has likely been reported in media. In a country that doesn’t have a drop of oil, the military government at that time could consider that sleeping with the fan on as a waste.[…]
