Korea: To Me, a Blog is ___________

Categories: East Asia, South Korea, Humanitarian Response, Ideas, Technology

We all know about the ‘wave’ at sporting events. You stand up and down following strangers the behind or front, or left or right sides around you. Now the ‘blog wave’ is popular in Korea. A blogger or portal site suggests an idea and starts riding the ‘blog wave.’ This time, a blogger [1] started the sentence, “To me, a blog is _______” and tossed it to the next blogger. How do people think about blogs?

To me, a blog is a “laboratory.”
At first, I thought that blogs are one of the means for marketing. The reason why I started a blog was for marketing. Honestly speaking, I was rather conservative about the web. At that time, I liked individual homepages and was actually concerned about the fast dispersion of individual media—I was worried about decentralization of information. I was worried that it would be used in wrong ways. But now I don’t worry anymore. We have kept making good services thorough constant experiments and challenges. And we will continue this. So I wanted to experiment on my own blog and would like to be the one who can make something good on the Web. A laboratory for something I can make later, it will be my blog. Can blogs absorb SNS (Social Network Service)? Can blogs put down roots as media? Can blogs be a solid business model?

To others as well as me, this blog is a laboratory and there are a lot of people who help my research. All bloggers are researchers and they are power bloggers.

To me, a blog is “perfect size clothing [2].”
It was like that from the beginning. It’s like a tool that gathers all things that I need. It is a dream that I have had for a while and it is the best tool. As soon as I knew that Naver made a service, paper, I started my blog. Sometimes, it’s a diary into I can open my heart. Sometimes, it’s a letter that I can show my gratitude and greeting to others. It is a business log that I report. It’s café through which I can introduce music that I like to others.
One fact that is not going to change is that when I use my blog, I feel so comfortable and free as when I wear perfect-fitting clothes.[…]

To me, a blog is a “life partner.” [3]
[…]It seems that the Internet is for the young generation, the teenagers and those in their twenties. However, the most active bloggers are usually their own thirties and forties. The teenagers are busy studying and those in their twenties are busy dating.^^ Then why are those in their thirties and forties crazy about blogs? I will talk based on my own thought. We have been the through chaotic 70s and 80s after the financial difficult time of the 60s. Before we recognize what is important to our lives, we were thrown to society and are already in the late 30s or early 40s. And we look back at our own lives. Looking back at our lives and having the strong desire to make our own lives, blogs are the best tool. We can simply make our own space and connect to others at ease. We can share what I think and learn what others think. In addition, we build up important networks in our lives. Where can we find a better tool than this one? […]

.

To me, a blog is a “diary”. [4] When I started a blog, I just jotted down notes about my daily lives and scrapped information I needed. But now it’s like a storage place where everything is combined.

To me, a blog is “freedom.” [5] The freedom of expression, thoughts, and even from myself.

To me, a blog is a “meeting.” [6]
What is the meaning of a blog? When I started my blog in 2006, it was like a ‘job.’ After one or two weeks the last time I put the post passed by, sometimes the blog was like a ‘burden.’ Sometimes, I made other visitors laugh with my posts. Even though I was not there, the blog was a ‘tie’ to connect us. It is a friend that listens to my boring stories. Of course, a function as a market site that I can brag of what I make is also important.[…]

Before, what I put in my posts meant pouring out letters on an empty monitor screen. Now I start talking with someone who will read this blog. Through blogs, we share our hearts and meet others.[…]

To me, a blog is a “college note.” [7]
I think about college notes I took, writing down what professors said. With the expectation that those letters would appear in mid-term or final-term tests, I wrote down everything I could do. Just two years passed from the graduation, but they all disappear. My memory is fading. I don’t remember how many notes I had and what contents I wrote down. I started my own blog when I got to know about Wiki in summer, 2000.[…] I pour down dreams I still have and knowledge I obtain in the real world on my blog and it is a 28 year old man’s note. I don’t have to find where they are 2 or 3 years later and don’t need to try in order to enliven my memories.
