Bahrain: Celebrating an Arabic blogging community

Many bloggers in the Arab world use Arabic-language blog platforms such as Jeeran and Maktoob, and these sites have developed into large communities crossing national blogospheres. One popular Bahraini blogger, Shaima Al Watani, is celebrating her first year as part of the community of Jeeran bloggers.

Shaima, whose blog is called ‘Scattered clippings‘, tells the story of how she started:

في مثل هذا اليوم من العام الماضي كانت بداية إنطلاق رحلتي في جيران .. هذه الرحلة التي دشنها لي زوجي وليد الذي قام بإفتتاح المدونة لي خلال شهر يونيو .. وبقيت المدونة خالية حتى قررت في اليوم الخامس من شهر يوليو أن أقوم بإنزال أول موضوع لي بعنوان ” شخصية الإنسان هل تتغير ؟” ، وهو موضوع قديم كتبته في أثناء دراستي الجامعية وقد أنتظرت لحظة بلحظة عدد زوار المقال في ذلك اليوم ..
ولم أجد تعليق يذكر على مقالي هذا .. ولكني تابعت إنزال المقالات إلى أن جاءني التعليق الأول من الأخت رباب أحمد من البحرين وكانت هذه هي البداية ..

The beginning of my journey with Jeeran was on a day like this, last year. This journey was launched by my husband Waleed, who started my blog in June. It remained empty until I decided on July 5 to write an article which I entitled “The personality of people ..does it change?” It was an old article I had written during university. I waited second by second watching the number of visitors on that day and I did not get a single comment on this article. However, I continued posting until I got the first comment from Rabab Ahmed from Bahrain and that was the start ..

جيران بالنسبة لي باتت المجتمع المصغر الذي يحوي كل ما تحويه المجتمعات الأخرى من خير وشر .. ومن صالح وطالح ..
ولذلك عاهدت نفسي أن أكون صريحة مع الجميع ومخلصة لهم بقدر إخلاصهم لي ،هي تجربة رائعة نلتقي من خلالها بأناس يختلفون في مستوياتهم الفكرية والإجتماعية وحتى الأخلاقية ..

Jeeran, for me, has become a small community which contains all the good and bad in other communities. This is why I made a pledge to remain frank with everyone and loyal to them as much as they are loyal to me, which is a great opportunity to meet different people – those who differ from you intellectually, socially and even morally.

However, some problems have occurred along the way:

بعد شهر واحد من دخولي لعالم جيران تعرضت لموقف كاد أن يتسبب بإنسحابي من جيران حيث تعرضت لسرقة مقالين من مقالاتي وبعد مشادات ومداولات مع من قام بهذا الفعل شعرت بضرورة الإنسحاب ولكن قوتي التي اسعفتني على أرجاع حقي منعتني من ذلك وكان قراري بأن لا أسمح لأي كان أن يدفعني لهذا القرار وأنا على يقين بأني على حق فلست ممن يضعفون أمام أهل الباطل ويفسحوا لهم المجال ليعيثوا في الأرض الفساد .. وأدرك اليوم صحة قراري وأنا أرى الكثير من المدونات مهجورة بعد أن تطاول أصحابها على الآخرين بالشتم والإتهام والسرقة .

A month after joining the world of Jeeran, I was subjected to an incident which could have caused my withdrawal from that community after two of my articles were plagiarised. After a lot of confrontations and discussions with the blogger who did that, I felt it necessary to withdraw but what made me continue was my struggle to retrieve my right. My decision then was to never allow anyone to make that decision when I knew I was right. I am not the type who becomes weak in the face of wrong doers and allow them to spread their ill deeds. I realise today the soundness of my decision as I see a lot of deserted blogs, after their owners were insulted, accused and robbed.

من الأيام السيئة أيضا في جيران ذلك اليوم الذي أقتحم فيه أحد القراصنة لمدوناتنا مسبباً لي فراغ هائل دفعني لرفع نداء الإستغاثة لإدارة جيران بأن تنقذ مدوناتنا من أيدي القراصنة

One of the bad days too was when my blog got hacked, causing me to panic and appeal to Jeeran's administration to save our blogs from the hackers.

But overall it has been a very positive experience:

من إنجازات عامي الأول أني تربعت على عرش الترتيب لمدوني البحرين لمدة طويلة ووصلت إلى مراكز متقدمة في الترتيب العام لمدوني جيران، كما أن إدارة جيران قامت بإختيارعدد من مقالاتي لتكون من المقالات المختارة ، ولعل أهم الإنجازات هو تعريفي بأخوان أعزاء من شتى بقاع العالم العربي ، وتبادل الأفكار مع الآخرين

Among the achievements of my first year blogging was that I topped the charts of Bahraini bloggers for a long period of time. I was also among the top bloggers on Jeeran. A number of my posts were also featured by Jeeran. Perhaps my biggest achievement was getting to know bloggers from across the Arab world and exchanging ideas with them.
