China: Citizen journalists prepare for the Olympics

Global Voices OlympicsFootloose citizen reporter Zuola has said [zh] he's going to be there, religious extremists are going to be there, foreign media seem to be looking for local stringers, and cutting-edge web 2.0 companies are so convinced that something worth vlogging will happen during next month's Beijing Olympic Games that they're giving away free stuff, despite the apparent attempt to ban any filming of Olympic events.

Can we say that any citizen reporter in the area worth their salt should already be finalizing plans to be in Beijing on 888? If you're not, now's the time to reconsider. Late last month, global citizen journalism site GroundReport announced a 500 USD prize and top spot on their homepage for best citizen reporter video taken next month:

“Because the Beijing Olympics will be the first covered by Citizen Journalists. And while traditional media converges in Beijing, we want to know the story behind the story, from regular people like YOU.”

If you visit the site, don't forget to check out the rules. Top of the list of ideas for things GroundReport is looking for: Protests.

  • You will support Bush if he supports the Olympics? Talk about selling out. Isn’t Bush sorta in the wrong for that whole Iraq thing? And what is it about the Olympics and support for it that sways you so? Is it that you will support Bush is he supports some sporting event and you really love sports? You will support Bush if he kowtows to the regime and that somehow benefits you?

The Olympics is a business and a sporting event, the Olympic spirit is eroded, so what is it that you love so much about Bush attending this game?

  • The most oppressed nation in the world – TIBET.

  • China’s internal party documents expose repressive strategy in Tibet

The April and May installments of the confidential bulletin Xigang Tongxun (Tibet Communications) which is circulated only within party officials uncovered that China is embarking on a series of predetermined political domination in Tibet. Translations of the original texts were obtained by The Sunday Times in Hong Kong.

Zhang Qingli who was appointed the Party Secretary of Tibet in 2006 is disclosed to have planned an operation of ‘re-education’ in private communiqué with other Communist party members.

The March unrest broke out in Lhasa, Tibet after decades of brutal administration of a regime which has little or no record of human rights execution. The internal papers rated casualties of Chinese soldiers and police at 242, with 120 homes and business establishments destroyed in Lhasa. The Tibetan Government in Exile on its part accounts the loss of Tibetan lives at 209 with those injured above 1000 and 5,972 behind bars.

Amid China’s claims of separatist acts by the Dalai Lama and followers alike, Zhang acknowledged that there was much ‘destruction of social stability’ during the anti-China protest in Tibet.

The head of party line in Tibet, Lie Que was even more overt in his comments carried by the official Tibet Daily June 2.

“We must clean out the monasteries and strengthen the administrative committees. After that we will absolutely control them,” he said.

Accusing the Tibetan spiritual leader of masterminding the disturbances that took place Zhang has according to party manuscripts clandestinely said,

“We must learn lessons from this issue and organize our masses to build up an impregnable fortress against the tide of encirclement to beat our enemy.”

“But we are far from final victory because the Dalai Lama group, which was exploited by western enemy forces, is making a new plan for separatism,” he said. “So you, the leaders of work units, must guard your gates and manage your people well. Let leaders of street committees be vigilant and keep watch on all outsiders.

“Propaganda and education are our party’s greatest advantages. These are the most useful weapons with which to defend ourselves against the Dalai Lama group. So let the propaganda department work more actively to expose its plots.”

He is further quoted to have said, “Each department should make full use of those religious people who love the motherland and love religion, in order to make the administrative committees work with vigor,” implying that the law enforcement, religious branches and all political divisions should apply his directives.

China’s leaders have earlier blamed the Dalai Lama of plotting ‘terror’ in Tibet and conspiring with Uighur nationalists in Xinjiang to escalate tension in the region in the run up to the Olympic Games.

The Dalai Lama has always maintained that He supported Beijing’s hosting of the Olympic Games but claimed that pro-Tibet demonstrators had a right to voice their opinion as long as they refrained from violence.

Zhang created much controversy during the Lhasa leg of the Olympic torch relay prompting the IOC to reprimand him when he said, “Tibet’s sky will never change and the red flag with five stars will forever flutter high above it. We will certainly be able to totally smash the splittist schemes of the Dalai Lama clique.” The remark made by Zhang was seen by many as politicizing the Games and a gross display of control over Tibet which was once an independent nation.

China’s great will to tighten its grip of control and authority over Tibet in the coming days with mass restriction implied on practicing one’s religion and exercising basic rights of speech and movement will cause Tibetan minorities to suffer depriving them further of their dignity and morality. Party leaders are in no doubt that their crusade against Tibetans will succeed; for them it is yet another feather in their unscrupulous caps.

Olympic and police-being-slayed,stir up uneasy feelings between Beijing and Shanghai

China Times Su Shang Le reports from Shanghai

The fact that Beijing stage olympic, and Yang Jia,being Beijing local, stabbed a numbers of Shanghai policemen to death, has again stired up uneasy feelings between Beijing and Shanghai. The swearing and cursing between netizens from these two rivaling cities has gone a bit out of hand.

On 1-July,Yang Jia,a Beijing local, went into Shanghai Jah-bei police building and stabbed six policemen to death; Shanghai police not only called Yang Jia a “outsider”,also claimed that Yang is a “queer kind of guy”.Beijing newspaper retorte that Yang “would offer his seat to others in a bus”,and many Beijing citizens are not happy that Shanghai police calling national capital’s citizen an “outsider”

Yesterday,on one mainland famous internet forum,a supposed to be from Shanghai netizen, made the accusation that Beijing’s polluted air is not suitable for olympic events. It immediately sparks a fierce volley of verbal exchange.

One Beijing netizen said:”What has Beijing Olympic got to do with you guys ? Just because it is not being staged in your home town ? A bunch of SB,you need to be stabbed by real macho men, should have stabbed a few more, the water from Huang Pu Jiang has turned you lots into brain-deaths.”

Another netizen:”Recently us Beijing men really are very proud of ourself.Hero Yang, one of us,killed six Shanghai policemen with a single blade. What a beautiful and sweet feeling of revenge. This few years,we are sick of petty Shanghai men the like of Yao Ming and Liu Xiang. I suggest full pardon for Hero Yang, and vote him into the central government.”

Blog on Tianya.cn discuss olympic and “Sicked Man Of Asia”

It was Spring time, about 7 or 8 years ago,I went to Li Jiang to spend my holidays,at the half way up the Jade Dragon Snow Mountain,we hire a few horses to ride. The little boy that lead my horse was thin and small, with dark skin, looks like 7 or 8 years old.On the way we started talking, was surprised to know that he was already 15.In Chin dynasty,at this age,he would have been marching towards battle field with spear on his shoulder.Being shocked,I asked him was he studying. He said he would like to,but had no money.I fell into silence, because being a poor student myself, couldn’t help much, beside gave him extra 50 60 yuan when paying the bill, can’t do much.I asked what was the main diet, the answer was sweet potato.I thought: “Every meal sweet potato?A bit impossible.”He replyed:”You must be dreaming, even if we like to have sweet potato for every meal, there was just not enough sweet potato to go around, because of the mountain’s cold weather, the sweet potato production is very low,we would be happy and satisfied if there is plenty of sweet potato to fill the tummy at every meal.”

At half way resting time,I saw another little boy stood beside him, even shorter than him by a few inches, looked like 6 years old.I asked; “How old are you?”He replied: “14”. I feel terrible. We were charged 50 yuan for each horse we hired, but this little boy said, even though his family own the horse,at the end he only get 10 yuan, the other 40 yuan goes toward the village’s authority, called managment charges.

At the end, slowly,I no longer feel surprised,China is just like that,in the middle of the mountain, our fellow countrymen are weak from hunger and with only rags on their bodies,we joyfully declare,we no longe are “Sicked Man Of Asia”,instead,we are a powerful nation of sports; In front of television sets, our students in towns and cities, howling for the nation to “Out Of Asia”,the mountain people, can only chew cold sweet potato under oil lamp;when we smash television sets because of losing soccer match, the mountain people don’t even know what is soccer nor television;when massive taxpayers’s money is pumped into sustaining this so called powerful sporting nation’s bubble, these people, their voice being taken away at birth,at the same time, lost the right of education, because they have no money to pay the fees.

Because of this incidence,my conclusion is,China remains “Sicked Man Of Asia”,moreover, this title will stay for a long time, just to nurture and produce a numbers of “macho man”,like they did at the “Great Leap Forward”,will not help.

    Netizen 1 reply:
    Very good!
In fact,Chinese is all about inferior complex, deep and profound, the more the feeling of inferiority, the stronger the desire of being accepted and recognized by outsiders,on the surface,Chinese are especially self-important and self-inflat,do not accept criticism and different opinions,in fact it is the “Spirit Of Ah Q”,psycho sickness, this sickness is also reflected on sports, the feverish worshipping towards gold medals, and complete ignoring of all others.

    Netizen 4 reply:
Lets say we get all the gold medals, still have massive numbers of “Sicked Man”,both in spritual and physical sense.
To use the whole country’s resourses,to nurture a few gold medals.
Got nothing to do with us common folks.

    Netizen 5 replay:
Well,is there anything CHINA does, not about window dressing?
The root of evil was planted in Mao tse-tung era, when common folks were starved to death, yet massive amount of cash and resourses were shipped to Africa.
This kind of practise is deep in the bone mellow,is everywhere,to reverse it,there is only one way……………

Beijing Olympic, the most autocratic olympic game in history?

“Regulations on audience attanding Olympic games”,announced by the Beiing Olympic Committe, prohibit audience to “running in the nude”,also prohibit audience wearing same or similar clothes, absolute prohibit carrying flags, any political and religious activities is absolute NO NO.This coming Beijing Olympic, probably is the most autocratic olympic game in history,Chinese communist, not only decide for the audience on how to express their emotion, also decide for both athletes and audience how to pray on individual religious belief.

Can’t athletes pray to his or her own GOD before the game commence? Can’t fans pray for their beloved teams? In many countries national anthem, all have this phrase “God save our nation”,can all these be counted as religious activities?Olympic venues would only allow waving of 5 stars red flags ,I belive relevent department will provide free 5 stars red flags to all the audience, just like they did to oversea Chinese students. But what about audience from foregin countries waving their own national flags? These unhumane, rediculus “olympic game rules”,is out of anyone’s imagination but the Chinese Communist Party.

If one may ask, shouting “go on America”,”go on Taiwan” during the game, would that be counted as political activities?Don’t tell me when audience wearing clothes with similar signs of 2008 olympic letters, yelling “go on China” will be classed as disturbance of venues. With Beijing Olympic approaching,CCP more and more turns this “grand party” into the like of then “Nazi Olympic”.Don’t tell me this is a miracle that China gives to the World ? Don’t tell me CCP,using these kind of actions, shows to the world’s people,CCP=Nazi Party of today?
