  I don’t actually live in China, but I’m from a Chinese background and visit Hong Kong quite regularly. I don’t know how accurate it is in reflecting China, but it does resonate a lot with what my mother said to me almost exactly a year ago: “We [Chinese] might seem to be less accepting, but I think we sometimes try harder [to understand/accept/cope].”

  It was just after we came home from a formal dinner with the elementary graduating class, who were predominantly caucasian, and perhaps more specifically with WASP-y influences. For all the rights that queer communities have won in Canada, the systemic alienation that entire night was rather suffocating. I had never mentioned anything either – it was just that I had worn a tux.

  Well we have to respect people regardless of their
  race, nationality, ethnicity, religion, gender etc
