China: Chinese Red Cross on corruption watch

Bloggers continue to monitor earthquake corruption, as they wait for the truth to come out as to why so many school buildings collapsed so easily in this month's massive earthquake.

The parents of children who died, though, aren't waiting. On Sunday a group from Mianzhu city took photos of their children and marched to the larger Deyang city to seek justice [zh] from Party officials there.

The problem goes back to criticism that many schools which completely crumbled in the earthquake were cut short and built to stand as sturdy as though made from tofu suds. Sohu blogger Crisker offers photos from Mianzhu which us a better sense of what the childless parents there are feeling now:

“The children didn't die as a result of natural disaster, they died of dangerous buildings.”

Uncle, why did only our school collapse? Why???

Volunteers and others at the front line of the relief efforts continue [zh] to voice concerns about what they see there.

As for Chinese Red Cross, which is handling the vast majority of domestic donations for the earthquake relief fund, several journalist-bloggers early this week came across a thread on the heavily patriotic Strong Nation Forum which strongly suggests something shady is going on at Chinese Red Cross in how it purchases many of its tents.

It looks like Bullog blogger and ‘smoking gun’ tip-off man the ProState In Flames blogger was one of the first to give this story [zh] some prominence.

Just what exactly kind of relationship is it that Wang Ping has with The Most Awesome Tent Company?
Source: Strong Nation Forum

Comrade Wang Ping from the Red Cross, the netizens are curious: just what sort of relationship is it that exists between you and this tent company? Red Cross, please stand up and boldly explain!

2. All information comes from the official People'sNet websites and other official websites.

Today, the Strong Nation Forum invited Red Cross employees Wang Ping and others to come in for an interview, and uploaded to People'sNet the Red Cross purchasing contract and receipts that Wang Ping and others presented, so please see the text of the contract and the accompanying photos. What makes one most suspicious is that as Red Cross employees, they are being suspected of having given signatures representing a “Beijing Yulong Noah Tents Co.

Note: The representative of the supplier, “Beijing Yulong Noah Tents Co.,” is signed with the name “Wang Ping”. If, now, you question whether or not that is Wang Ping's signature, please see the signature on the inscription given to People'sNet, and whether the handwriting is consistent:

我们好奇于,王平代表北京裕龙诺亚帐篷有限公司(总经理叫王翠),和红十字会签订采购合同,但王平又在红十字会上班,怎么回事???

另据网络搜索,“北京裕龙诺亚帐篷有限公司”,法人是王翠,员工不足10人,
请看网络搜索图片地址:
http://www.sxdxs.com/HuangYe/BeiJing/46859.htm

We're very curious, just how is it that Wang Ping can represent Beijing Yulong Noah Tents Co. (whose General Manager is named Wang Cui) in signing a purchasing contract with the Red Cross, but at the same time be working for the Red Cross???

Also, following an internet search, Beijing Yulong Noah Tents Co. was incorporated by Wang Cui, and there are fewer than ten employees.
Please refer to this address from the internet search:

该公司可谓历史上最牛的小公司,员工不到10个,但却是15年以来,连续成为红十字会的唯一中标单位:

This company might just be the Most Awesome Small Company in history; with less than ten staff, it has successfully been the only bid winner for the Red Cross for the past 15 years; please see this url:

This is the record of Wang Ping's visit to the Strong Nation Forum:
Netizen tea3000: Yet again for the second time request our honored guest Wang Ping answer: what is your relationship with Beijing Yulong Noah Tents Co. Ltd. General Manager Wang Cui? If there is none, please state that there is none.

Wang Ping: I do not know this person “Wang Ping”, and I have no relationship with this person. I've also stated that our open tenders are handled by a state service center. I myself have never taken part in purchasing or open tender work.

So we are very curious, Wang Ping says he does not know Wang Cui, but, Wang Cui has been supplying the Red Cross for over 15 years, and it is its only successful tendering company, so is it possible that that don't know each other?

We're very curious, as to how this company, whose annual power consumption consists of only just one megawatt hour, gets its production capacity from, enough to support the special treatment of being “the only bid winner for the Red Cross for the past 15 years”?
(Please see this internet search result: http://www.shyqy.net/uploadfile/20077385110409.xls)

Would you risk going to prison to make an accusation like that? As a preface to his reposting of the story from ProState In Flame's blog, Bullog blogger and former journalist Wen Yunchao writes with uncharacteristically strong language in his post ‘Time for a life-or-death fight in defence of of news freedom’:

全面和谐的丧钟已经敲响,我们必须打一场殊死的咨讯自由的保卫战,为我们的公民权利,为我们的良心。欢迎大家将下文无限度转发至你所有可以发布信息的博客及论坛,并转发任何有助于维护我们的公民权利与良心的信息。我们誓将所有和谐的指令淹没在人民群众的汪洋大海之中。

The bells of full-out harmoniousness have begun ringing, and we must fight a life-and-death battle in defence of news freedom, for our civil rights, and for our consciences. I welcome everyone to post unlimitedly the below text to all the blogs and forums to which you are able to spread information, and to repost any information of assistance in safeguarding our civil rights and consciences. We swear to drown all harmonious orders in the vast ocean that is the masses of the people.

After the Strong China Forum and then the highly-regarded ProState In Flames, the news quickly hit Tianya and nearly all major forum sites, so the human flesh search engines have been able to dig up every trace mention of Beijing Yulong Noah Tents Co. that exists online, including a whole series of bids the company had won with the Ministry of Civil Affairs going as far back as 1998. ProState In Flames himself has since posted detailed info on companies that Wang Cui himself has incorporated, as well as more on related tenders for Chinese Red Cross tent purchases.

Since it's been put like that, what have you seen that you can pass on?

    spread the message,

Your message certainly sounds like you are pointing your fingers at our honorable governments such Wen Jia Bao (nickname Bao Bao) and our president Hu Jintao

Listen your developed countries assume way more materials than China. You dump used stuff on China and developing countries such as used cars and used garbage!!!! What are you complaining about pollution????

You should say “all people on earth should work together to stop pollution . .. ” Then comment will be convincing

    Kai
    You message is DISTURBING,

“When news of the Twin Towers getting hit on 9/11, many (not all) Chinese school children stood up and applauded.””

    1) Did you witness personally on children applauding?
    2) Did you watch it on TV or read the newspaper? Even if you did, these are just children who do not quite understand what is right and wrong yet.
    3) Stone is 50 years old, unless her IQ less than a child to say that kind of stuff
    4) I find it interesting that you have to bring out the kids, are you suggesting that the kids who died in the earth quake is the result of ***** because they laughed about 9/11? hm?
    5) Why do you have to say Chinese were happy, maybe the world was happy?
    6) I hate comparing but you asked for it. China donated $7.0 million to Katrina, Bush donated $0.5M to sichuan earthquake

What makes you so sure that American kids are not applauding on China’s earthquake????? Everybody has free speech, but when you are a celebrity, and you are speaking in front of flashing cameras, you have a responsibility. ..

Sharon spoke into the microphone to be broadcasted over the world. That has consequences.

    @ liang #20:

I’m going to respond to your comments. Unfortunately, I don’t think you’ll understand what I’m saying.

China has involved itself in the affairs of other countries and sovereign entitles before. That is a fact. You claiming otherwise is NOT a fact. I will agree that China has meddled in the affairs of other countries far less than some other countries, most notably the United States. That, however, is a function of power. If you don’t have power, you can’t really meddle in other countries’ affairs. If you do, you can and historically, you often will. Now that China’s power and influence is solidifying, we’ll see if China projects it more.

I agree with you that people need to be careful with distorting facts. However, we need to remember that the Chinese distort facts too, not just the outsiders.

    @ knights #21:

I hope you’re not talking to me. If you are, what the hell are you talking about? How am I pointing my fingers at anyone and for what?

Yes, many developed countries, especially the United States, consume a ton of natural resources and pollute heavily. However, that doesn’t mean China should freely pollute also. You do understand that developed countries don’t just criticize China for polluting, right? They tend to promote anti-pollution to themselves too.

    @ knights #22:

My message is disturbing but true.

    1. My girlfriend was one of the students who stood up and applauded, along with her class. Many of my friends have said the same thing, usually with amusement. Do they really hate America? No, not really, but part of them felt 9/11 was deserved, similar to perhaps how Sharon Stone feels.

    2. You’re making excuses. Children do what adults and their society teaches or tolerates them to do. Adults can be idiots too. So can teenagers and young adults. We know that because we know of the fen qing.

    3. See above.

    4. You’ve either completely misunderstood my point or you’re trying to attack me with a ridiculous argument. I said nor implied anything of the sort that you’re suggesting. Please stop with the immature attacks.

    5. You’re proving my point. I mentioned the Chinese because I’m pointing out to you that Sharon Stone is not the only person who thought of disasters being the result of karma. Many, not all, Chinese people felt that way too about 9/11 and you’re right, so did many other people in the world, especially many Middle Easterners. Like I said originally, wingnuts.

    6. Your statistic does not include the charity donated by Americans overall. Different cultures and different ways of donating. Stop with the stupid arguments.

I KNOW some Americans applauded the earthquake. I’m not arguing that there aren’t wingnuts in America or anywhere else in the world. You’re so defensive that you’re not even reading or understanding what I’m saying.

I agreed that what Sharon Stone said will have consequences, especially for her. Please read what I’m saying before you respond. You’re getting ridiculous…as usual.

  • Matt Y.

    @Knight:
No, Sharon Stone does not bear any responsibility to please anybody. Meanwhile you do not have to feel hurt or something. It’s not news that the majority of actors are not smart. Only the Americans think actors can be viable options for governors or presidents. Still, let me rephrase what’s already been said in previous posts, that words shouldn’t be something that hurts you – watch out for gunfire or sticks and stones, though. I think what you need to wake up from is the terminological system of some old propaganda. Being a celebrity has nothing to do with being a prick or a bitch… or, otherwise, a nice person, so to speak.

    @Kai #20:
It’s unwise to take a bet on the personality of somebody you don’t personally know well. (Correct me if you are a close friend of Ms. Stone please.) It’s the underlying principle of all the checks and balances existing in all democracies that, if, we were ever to assume anything, we assume that people will act upon only self-interest, while morality being out of the picture. I personally wouldn’t advise my friends to believe a person who acts for living.

And oh, come on, Knight does not embarrass you – I doubt anyone could, actually. Wasn’t it you telling Knight to stop the melodrama? The last paragraph of your post (#20) says it all about your little delusion of grandeur. Let me take a not-so-wild guess – you probably grew up or currently live in the good old U.S. of A.;-)

  • Knights

Hey Kai, the U.S. immigration office is ready to issue you a greencard if you manage to get here. . .

  • Knights

    Matt Y:

Yeah, I think your point is pretty balanced and rational :-)

  • […] Uncle, why did our school collapse? Why???” […]

  • Matt Y.

    Well, Knights,
Actually sometimes Kai does have some valid points.

The only thing is that, 9 times out of 10, when I suddenly feel I don’t like the way somebody talks, that somebody is American. (But that is not to say all Americans are halfwits – as a matter of fact I have a friend from Arizona.)

Just remember, because of the “freedom of speech”, they are allowed to be loud-mouthed. Whether you consider them “freedom fighters” or plain pests is up to you.

  • Kai

    @ Matt Y:

    1. I also mentioned that people and countries act in their own self-interest so I fully understand that point. As for Sharon Stone’s personality, I’m just giving her the benefit of the doubt. Like you, it is less about defending her than it is being amused with how “hurt” people are by what a stranger, especially a celebrity, says.

    2. You’re right, what I said was a bit melodramatic. Yet, knights actually does embarass me as my fellow Chinese, along with anyone who harbors the same notions I chastise him for. Him randomly going off and trying to suggest that I was happy about the earthquake does indeed insult me too. But no, I’m not about to commit suicide over it. I was blunt, perhaps melodramtically, in hopes that it would translate into something he understands as he hasn’t seemed to understood anything else (which you’ve gathered as well).

I’m not sure what I said in that last paragraph that implies I have delusions of grandeur. Wait…aren’t you making bets about my personality right now? ;) Anyway, I appreciate your objections to how I sometimes sound (like a halfwit “American”), but avoid sidetracking knights into avoiding the actual issues at hand and going off about categorically hating anyone who disagrees with his worldview that China is a helpless victim.

    @ knights:

The only reason you said Matt Y’s point was “balanced and rational” is because he included some insults against me. Otherwise, we said the same thing with regards to Sharon Stone. You’re so predictable. GVO needs a roll eyes smiley.

Ya. That is what the hamburger and sandwiches are for… :-)
