Korea: Torch Replay in Korea

Despite continual demonstrations by pro-Chinese and pro-Tibetan groups, the Torch Relay is almost at the end of its journey. It went through Korea. As in other countries, the fights of the two groups happened in the middle of Seoul. The violent actions from the Chinese groups and indifferent attitudes of the Korean policemen have been harshly criticized by netizens and bloggers. It has been the hottest issue on the Internet recently.

One of the reasons why netizens were upset [1]was the indolent reactions of the police compared to their reputation.

[…]Watching the news, I was surprised to see that five-star red flags flap near City Hall in Seoul. The government harshly restrained demonstrations of peasants who were angry with the relaxed beef trade between South Korea and the US [2]and college students who were angry with increases in tuition fee. But why didn’t they do anything toward demonstrators from a strong country? I didn’t know what to say when I saw the scene that domestic civil activists holding Tibet flags were surrounded by the demonstrators with five-star red flags. […]

Photos and video clips of violent actions which were not shown in mass media upset internet users [3].

What shall we do? Our people were hurt. A photo reporter was hurt as well. Brutality of Chinese students(?) beating people who were talking about human rights related to Tibet and who were against the forceful repatriation by the Chinese government of North Korean defectors happened in the capital of Korea.

Especially, the scene of Chinese students beating a Tibetan (some people argue that he was a Korean) in a hotel represents the dark side of Korea. Do I have to live in this kind of country where our police disregard Chinese brutality?[…]

In order to transport such a holy fire, we had to see people suffering from Chinese violence behind…

Is this the meaning of the Olympics?

Two sides, Chinese demonstrators and Korean policemen, have been criticized [4].

1. It is a shocking video [4]. I thought that those pro-Chinese demonstrators were simply Chinese laborers and it happened due to mass psychology. But I saw the Chinese demonstrators in a metro station near a college in Seoul on Sunday and it was shocking to see most of them were college students. Of course I didn’t check whether each of them was the college student, but there weren’t any factories around the place and I regarded them as college students. Some of them mark Chinese flag stickers on their faces, some of them tied the flags around their necks, and some flapped their flags, and others wore T-shirts having Chinese flags. It seemed that they casually walked back home after they finished the street cheerings during the World Cup. Watching them, I wondered whether they really threw wrenches, stones, and garbage at anti-Chinese demonstrators. They looked like they came back after the soccer game between Korea and China (They looked so happy… like they won). I won’t say regarding the Tibet issue they should have anti-Chinese demonstrations. But aren’t they college students? How many people of 1.5 billion population are college students? At least, after the study, they will be intellectuals. I was disappointed with their illogical behavior.

You cowards. Chinese students…

2. These are policeman who confronted college student demonstrators against the increase in tuition fees in Seoul on the 28th of March. They actively suppressed them for being against the government. But why are they just watching the demonstration which is not against the government? Where were Baek-gol-dan [7], which the new government even resurrected (which was the special police in the dictatorship of Chun Doo Hwan: Editor)? Didn’t they expect this, which happened in other countries during the torch relay? Like the video clip above, a Tibetan was beaten by a group of Chinese, a photo reporter was hit by a stone [8], foreigners who supported Tibet and wore Tibet Free t-shirts were hurt [9], and the police was even beaten [10].

On the 25th of April, when the Korea-Beef Organization had a demonstration in front of a government office in Goa-cheon, 50,000 policemen were arranged. Can the police be arranged for activities against the government, but not for a demonstration that is not related to the government, but throws wenches and garbage? The reporter was beaten by a stone and the policeman was hurt (he was not even a policeman who worked for the torch relay. He was a guard of a hotel).

Are those demonstrators fine because they were not against the government?
You coward! Korean policemen~ I’m shamed.

Here are opinions [14]exchanged on a portal site.

This situation of the torch relay was the product of the strong economic power of China and the Korean government leaning on the Chinese economy made through the negotiations. A day before, the same scene happened in Japan. Korean policemen knew about it, but the government just observed because they didn’t want to be against the Chinese government. This event of Chinese students and even people that the Chinese government especially sent for this purpose working together was anticipated. It was the moment that the pragmatic diplomacy of the Lee Myung Bak government succeeded. Isn’t this the pragmatic diplomacy in his way? Regardless of the death of their people, they just focus on economy!

I support how Tibetans think and argue. But when we think about our experience with the Olympics, I also understand their (either Chinese students or Chinese-Koreans) extreme emotions. I think as the neighbor country we should objectively argue and try to give nice advice. In the time of the Seoul Olympics, as a dictatorship country, we were also boycotted. We should understand them. They’re not bad people and are just short of experiences.

Excuse me? Besides the Olympics, we’re talking about the violent demonstration this time. Boycott against the Olympics.. That’s not the point. Why are they violent toward demonstrators who demonstrate peacefully? Chinese can voice out what they think, but they can’t strangle others either. They even did not in China, but in Korea…

Do you think it is patriotism? If Koreans who are in other countries wear red devil clothes and beat the citizens there, are you going to understand? Koreans will confess that as the mistakes of Koreans. But the Chinese government and Chinese respect those violent students as patriots or heroes. It’s not related to experiences. It is extreme patriotism or selfish activity.

The protest could generate not a nice feeling to on-lookers [15]as well.

I didn’t have any antipathy against China, but now…the feeling is poured out.

There have been continual questions [16]of the meaning of the Olympics in the past and at the present.

From the Berlin Olympics, the torch relay started internationally. It was the idea of the Nazi government in order to internationally advertise the greatness of Arians. It was also the moment that international sports events started collaborating with politics. Going through references, Funk, National Secretary to support Joseph Goebbels [17]insisted that the Berlin Olympics is the best chance for the advertisement. I assume that watching TV of the Olympic games in a group also originated in the Berlin Olympics.

Peaceful fest doesn’t exist anymore. It’s for commercialism and nationalism. The more it is held, the worse the spirit of the Olympics is gone. And it is just a sports event not more than a fantastic combination of capitalism and nationalism. Until World War II, the Soviet Union turned down participating in the Olympics because it is capitalistic. But after that, in order to advertise socialism, they participated.
