  • That might be good, I think, but in another world. In this world, the only thing they would invite the Dalai Lama to China for, is as a means of easily killing him.

use your head .. if Dalai was in China, China would certainly try everything they can to protect him.

  • It doesn’t mean that they wouldn’t try to kill him too.

Although China doesn’t admit it, Dalai has been to Beijing in the 80s to discuss Tibet. Even now Dalai has said that his aides have started discussions with China. The problem is that there is no way each side can accept other side’s conditions. There is no way China will simply give up Tibet. Dalai had said during the riot that he has no control over the protesters, although now he has changed his story saying that if China gives Tibetans autonomy he will stop all protests.

  • Well… if you say so, I can’t discuss. Probably you know the case much more deeply than I could. I must say I’m a little surprised about Dalai Lama being in China in the eighties. So, there was a discussion that has gone nowhere?

    Daniel Duende,

Here is a paper published by Melvyn C. Goldstein of the Center for research on Tibet. Nickolas Kristof of the New York Times recommended this study as an objective view on Tibet/China/US relationship so it’s not propaganda from either side.

Apparently, after taking power in 1978 DengXiaoPing tried to reverse the effects of Cultural Revolution and was thinking of a plan to invite Dalai back. After visits in 1982, in 1984 Dalai government proposed a “One Country Two systems” type of rule much like what China had in mind with Taiwan and Hong Kong. The reception was not a good as China argued that Taiwan and Hong Kong are ruled by foreign governments while Tibet is ruled by China. Dalai went to US and spoke in front of Congress in 1987 and won nobel prize in 1989. Since then Dalai has been attacking China, which created a rift between him and the moderate reformists in the CCP. After TianAnMen the hardline communists won back power from the reformists and promptly proposed a more repressive government in Tibet. Dalai rebuffed multiple chances to speak with the Chinese government and continued his international campaign to force Beijing’s hand in the 90s, until it became apparent that China is emerging s a superpower.

  • Who is the world’s biggest liar? Dalai Lama, or the Chinese government? Anyway, in a world where you have governments like the North-American one, it’s hard to define who is the world’s biggest liar, don’t you think?

  • Thanks for the information, Chinese friend.

I’m not questioning what you’re saying anymore. Rather, I’m confessing I didn’t know some facts you’re bringing to us.

But, by the words you bring us, so Dalai Lama is on a political crusade against China, with no desire to negotiate, and still posing as a victim? What do you think of all that?
