Bulgaria, Macedonia: Blog Wars Over History

The relations between Bulgaria and Macedonia are no less complex and incomprehensible than those between Greece and Macedonia, although lately the former get less media exposure than the latter. The main problem between Sofia and Skopje is, once again, history.

To Bulgarians, the Macedonians were part of the Bulgarian nation until the beginning of the 20th century, when a large part of Macedonia fell under Serbian domination after the Balkan wars. Then, due to Serbia’s policy in the region and the doctrine of Macedonism, changes in the mindset of the local population occurred, leading to the forming of the Macedonian nation. The Comintern and Stalin’s stance on the issue also contributed to this result.

Macedonians, on the other hand, consider themselves an entirely separate nation, heir to an ancient people. They accuse their Bulgarian neighbours of having been an occupation power in their land and claim that Sofia is trying to appropriate parts of the history of Macedonia, like, for instance, King Samuil, St. Kliment Okhridski, the revolutionary Gotze Delchev, etc.

Bulgarians address similar accusations to Macedonia.

Contention is even further exacerbated by fears on the part of Macedonia that Sofia seeks to “assimilate” the Macedonians, while Bulgarians suspect their neighbours in seeking to annex Pirin region, which is part of the so-called Greater Macedonia.

All these contradictions have spilled over into the virtual space and sparked a permanent “war” over history between Bulgarian and Macedonian bloggers – a war that often exceeds the rules of “bon ton.” And the Bulgarian blogosphere, too, is debating the question of what should be Bulgaria's attitude towards Macedonia.

Blogger Peter Stoykov writes (BUL):

Some arguments about whether Macedonia is or has been part of Bulgaria, whether there exist a Macedonian language, nationality, the Macedonian question, and Bulgarian national interest in Macedonia… Historians, politicians and, most of all, internet morons are competing in speaking nonsense on the issue, as though their lives depend on that.

[…]

Is Macedonia Bulgarian?

No, it is not Bulgarian, it’s Macedonian. And I will tell you why, but I will first look back in time. In 2001, a regular census took place in Australia. Precisely then a Star Wars episode was released and as you know, there are many people crazy about this film. So, in the “Ethnicity” box in the census questionnaire some wisecracks wrote “Jedi”… […] What does this have to do with Macedonia? If Macedonians want to call themselves Macedonians, they have an indisputable right to do so.

[…]

So, what shall we do with the Macedonian question?

As a matter of fact, I am even glad that Macedonia is not part of Bulgaria and that a number of years ago it was torn away from Bulgaria and given over to Yugoslavia. Bulgaria, as our politicians have always been happy to say, “is a focus of stability on the Balkans” – unrest is boiling around us, there were fights and fission in Yugoslavia, Kosovo has been on the table, the Greeks fought with the Turks over Cyprus, Turks are fighting the Kurds, they have even crossed over the border into Iraq, five years ago Albanians made something which was very close to a revolution in Macedonia, fire was exchanged there.

If Macedonia were part of Bulgaria, we would be part of this madness.

Another renowned blogger, Peter Dobrev, responds (BUL):

“Macedonia is the cradle of the Bulgarian national spirit. And even if it is to become its grave, we will never give up the fight for its liberation.” This was the title with which the then large-circulation Outro newspaper appeared on the eve of the Balkan war. This used to be the dominant opinion until 1944 (when the communists took the power in Bulgaria). Today, however, regardless of the fact that Bulgaria in theory should have left the ideological constructs of totalitarianism, the memory of Macedonia has faded so much that it turns into polar extremes.

[…]

No wonder then that blogger Peter Stoykov thinks that there is no Macedonian question, that Macedonia is Macedonian, and whoever says the opposite is “an internet moron.”

[…]

Everybody has a God-given right of self-determination – as a Jedi, Eskimo or Macedonian. When, however, it’s a matter of general national significance, of causes that have cost the lives of thousands and matters that have changed the fate of a half of a people, it’s good to speak with a little understanding and knowledge. It’s necessary to separate personal opinion from the objective historical fact…

[…]

Just as everybody knows today that Alexander the Great was a Greek, so it is indisputable that all leaders of the Macedonian organisations after 1878 (the year of the Berlin congress and the subsequent liberation/emancipation of Bulgaria) were Bulgarians. These leaders, as well as the people as a whole, have always spoken of themselves as Bulgarians, and they have been seen as such by the foreign observers. All foreign observers, even the Serbian ones.

These two opinions sum up the main social attitudes in relation to Macedonia. The majority of Bulgarians have no claims to its neighbour, nor do they want to interfere in its domestic affairs, but many are irritated by the Macedonian blackmail to give up a part of their history and want the historic truth established. Similar voices are heard in Macedonia.

In the thick of one of the battles between Bulgarian and Macedonian bloggers, Macedonian blogger Ivica Anteski wrote in his ANTIblog (MKD):

If the Bulgarian and the Macedonian “truths” do not coincide, this means that they are not true (or at least one of them). Simple logic. And in court, when two eyewitnesses make contradicting testimonies, the case is solved by means of a confrontation. But historians don’t want to confront each other. It’s more likely that we, bloggers, slaughter ourselves first on the internet, than see the experts surpass the contentions through the power of arguments.

[…]

Scholars, historians, philologists, academics, Slavic studies experts (Macedonian and Bulgarian)!!! Sit down together and tell us where the problem is. Reach an understanding! Forget that you are Macedonian or Bulgarian – scholars have no nationality. The truth and the facts are their nationality. Clear out the problems.

In such an atmosphere, on March 31, several days before the NATO summit in Bucharest, Sofia-based Manfred Woerner Foundation and the Atlantic Club of Bulgaria introduced a brochure titled “Bulgarian Policies on the Republic of Macedonia,” which was written by a group of Bulgarian history, Balkan studies and diplomacy scholars.

Bulgarian policies on the Republic of Macedonia
Image: komitata.blogspot.com (CC 3.0)

The purpose of the publication is to be used in the process of defining Bulgaria's Macedonia-related policies. Blogger Konstantin Pavlov, who attended the presentation, published the following report (BUL):

The Republic of Macedonia is about to join the EU and NATO. When exactly this will happen is not clear yet. The problem lies in the fact that, on the basis of the argument between Greece and Macedonia, the majority of independent politicians and observers take the side of Macedonia, without giving it much thought. (David against Goliath). And although the argument over the name elicits sympathy for Macedonia, the arguments that are being used – ancient Macedonia, that has survived down to the present day, the “autochtonal” Macedonian population, having been “enslaved” and “assimilated” by its bad neighbours, including the “bad Bulgarians,” gains ground with the people who sympathize with Macedonia. Those sympathies might lead to extremely negative consequences for Bulgaria, like, for example, “giving up” [May 24 as a national holiday] […]. It seems the book on the subject is not bad (I had no nerve to read it) and, unfortunately, is written in a complex, pseudo-scientific language with the purposes not all too clear. The result is nearly contrary to the objective sought – to write a clear, concise and unequivocally logical (right, winning) policy of the Bulgarian state towards the challenges coming from Macedonia. Well, it has not been achieved very well.

Having read the book and Pavlov’s report, Macedonian blogger Volan wrote (MKD):

The desire of Bulgarian politics – one people – two nations – is clearly discernible…

It is clear that the problems between Skopje and Sofia cannot be solved until the Balkan approach to history as property is not given up, and as long as it is being divided to “mine” and “yours” – in this case, into “Macedonian” and “Bulgarian.”

Mr. Hellenic Headbreaker, you dont even know your own history let alone our Macedonian.I will not quote anything before 1832.In 1903 the Macedonins rised againts the Ottoman Empire and established the first Republic of Macedonia. Goce Delchev was born in the Greek part of Macedonia {Northern Greece}He gave his life for Macedonia, are you deniyng? There is no secret that Greece is even today prosecuting the Macedonian Minotity in Greece. The VINO ZITO in Lerin{Florina} took the Greek government to court in Statsburg and won both times.Nikodin the Macedonian priest has been beaten on several times by the Greek government.Just days ago they were throwing rocks and eggs at his house. Is this the democracy you defending? If you go to Pakistan a province called Unzu you will find Macedonians from Alexander the Great. These people speak the old Macedonian, but we also use lots of same words. They have the 16 ray flag and declairing themsels Macedonian not Greek. Greeks did went there, build a social home that the Macedonians do NOT even go inside. These people joint Pakistan in 1974.They have their own King and Queen, they say they are Macedonian not Greek. would you like to visit them? To the west of Pakistan there are 40 towns of Macedonians called the Kalash people, they also claim they are Macedonians and not Greek. How can you claim that they were Hellenic? The Greek history my friend is so distorted that you even dont know who you are.On my name issue, my grandfather came back to our hometown in 1928 with our family name in Macedonian, the Greeks wanted to change it to sound Greek. His name was Yuve a name that goes to 1770. He refused and in 1930 came back to Canada and changed it to present. My grandfather first arrived in 1909 at the Ellis iland in USA. He and his brotherinlaw declaired Macedonians in the register check it out my friend before you make fasificate comments just to suit your Greek interest.Greece never occupied Macedonia before 1913, put it through your head.Do I need to tell you more?.I learned the Greek history in a country that was teaching me the true history of Greece as well Macedonian.

First off Nikodim and the Rainbow Party are nothing more than trouble-makers and though I cannot and will not condone the actions toward them in any other country they would have been decapitated for their recalcitrance-they have spread propaganda and irridentism where they are fortunate that no further action has been taken.

Now to address the disgusting untruths you have spouted- I don’t know who I am?! The hell I don’t son- more like you’re a Bulgarian who’s having an identity crisis. You never even bothered to answer my questions so that illustrates to me that you have things to hide.

It appears to everybody that you “Peter Givens” have no idea of what is true and not- the Kalash have said time and again that they are descended from Hellenes. For your reading pleasure:

“Long long ago, before the days of Islam, Sikander e Aazem came to India. The Two Horned one whom you British people call Alexander the Great. He conquered the world, and was a very great man, brave and dauntless and generous to his followers. When he left to go back to Greece, some of his men did not wish to go back with him but preferred to stay here. Their leader was a general called Shalakash (i.e: Seleucus). With some of his officers and men, he came to these valleys and they settled here and took local women, and here they stayed. We, the Kalash, the Black Kafir of the Hindu Kush, are the descendants of their children. Still some of our words are the same as theirs, our music and our dances, too; we worship the same gods. This is why we believe the Greeks are our first ancestors.”
Michael Wood, “In the footsteps of Alexander the Great”, p.8

“When the great hero and general, Alexander, who was as great as the god Apollo and Zeus, left his troops here, he asked them to stay here in this land without changing their beliefs and traditions, their laws and culture until he returned from the battles in the East. This is a story that is told not in a village in Greece but on the the mountainsides of the great Hindu Kush. In this remote area of the northwestern region of Pakistan lives a peculiar tribe, the Kalash. The Kalash proclaim with pride that they are the direct descendents of Alexander the Great. There are many similarities between them and the Hellenes of Alexander the Great’s time. Similarities such as religion, culture, and language reinforce their claims to Hellenic ancestry.

The Kalash are a polytheistic people, meaning that they believe in many gods. The gods that they believe in are the twelve gods of Ancient Hellas which makes them the only people who continue this worship! Gods such as Zeus, the god of gods, Apollo, the god of the sun, and Aphrodite, the goddess of beauty, are such gods that they pay homage to. Shrines which are found in every Kalash village remind us of the religious sanctuaries we would stumble across in Ancient Hellas. They serve as houses of worship where prayers and sacrifices are offered. Oracles who played a major role in acting as mediators and spokespeople between the gods and the mortals still hold a position of importance in the social structure of the Kalash. Every question or prayer towards the gods is usually followed by a sacrifice of an animal. It is reminiscent of the sacrifices the Hellenes gave to the gods to assure them a victory over the city of Troy.

The Macedonians and the Kalash:Religions always possess certain traditions and rituals which are observed by their followers. The Kalash practice a ritual that is celebrated on August 6th. This feast day is named the Day of the Transfiguration. It is the day where the grapes are brought out to the god Dionysus to be blessed and to guarantee them of a plentiful crop. This ritual can be traced back to Ancient Hellas where it was practiced by the cult of Dionysus who paid their respect to the god of fertility and wine. An active member of the cult of Dionysus was Olympia, mother of Alexander the Great, who is said to have recruited many of her son’s soldiers and who in return practiced it throughout their expedition (Alexandrou, pg. 184).

The Kalash also live a lifestyle that can be positively compared to that of the Ancient Hellenes. Let us start with the observation of their homes. The Kalash are the only people in the East who make and use accessories such as chairs and stools that cannot be found anywhere else in the surrounding regions! Their chairs are decorated with drawings such as the ram’s horns which symbolize the horns that decorated Alexander the Great’s helmet. Battle scenes depicting Hellenic soldiers are also observed. In the recent archaeological discoveries in Vergina, Greek archaeologists found the exact same replicas as the ones the Kalash use in their homes (National Herald, pg. 7).

As we know, Pakistan is a nation ruled by Islamic law. Under the law of the Koran alcohol consumption is prohibited. When we enter the region of the Kalash we encounter fields that are inhabited by grape vines. The Kalash are the only people who produce and consume wine and indulge themselves in feasts such as for the aforementioned feast of Dionysus. Hellenes such as Socrates would participate in wine feasts such as we come across in the Symposium. Their feasts are always followed by songs and dances. The Kalash dance in a cyclical motion and the men usually follow it by loud cries of i-a and i-o which can be traced back to the battle cries let loose by Alexander’s soldiers. There is a saying held by the Pakistanis who state that only the Hellenes and the Kalash whistle in such a way (Alexandrou, pg 87).

In 1896 a British explorer by the name of George Robertson visited the Kalash and did a study on them. He concluded that fifty percent of the Kalash’s language derives from Ancient Hellenic. Such similarities can be found in their gods’ names. Zeus is called Zeo, Aphrodite is called Frodait, the name Dionysus has kept the same pronounciation. The Kalash have words such as demos meaning city-state and use the word ‘ela’ as an imperative command meaning come here. There was recently a tablet found in a village of the Kalash whose message was in the form of hieroglyphics. When the code was deciphered the message read, “Alexander the Great lives forever (National Herald, pg.8)”.

In this article we have observed similarities between people of the past, the ancient Hellenes and people of the present, the Kalash. Through these similarities the Kalash have justified their claim as descendants of Alexander the Great. Ancient Hellenes and the tales of Alexander the Great were once believed to exist only in history books. However as the article insists, these great legacies live on with the Kalash of the mountainous Hindu Kush.”

Who’s fooling who, ass?! It is patently obvious you have been taught nothing but garbage- and where are you sources?! You’re telling pork-pies as usual; Delcev, Sandanski, Gruev, Tsar Samuel and all these others you claim were all Bulgarians- it’s amazing how you are trying to claim all these figures as you have nothing to claim of your own- pathetic really.

Stop the stupidity- you were taught nothing but a pseudo-history. What does the name Macedonia mean anyway, genius? And more to the point- do you even have any idea what the Sun of Vergina means? Come on answer me and don’t dodge the questions and give me citations-I want to see where you get your information from to debate this.

I am waiting for a decent challenge- and by the way, this whole 1913 Treaty of Bucharest stuff is a fairytale; but the way you’re all going it’ll become a reality when Albania and Bulgaria take everything from you; now won’t that be fun?

Give it up- you will find me and my fellow Hellenes very dangerous adversaries who will pummel you with facts not speculations, lies, Skopaganda and other trickery.

Who said that macedonians want to steel your history? Only bulgarians and greeks claim that. How can someone steel your history?.. when macedonians have their books published only in macedonian language( of course there a couple of them on english), but bulgarians and greeks when comes to that subject they publish their books mostly on english-I smell propaganda!!!
Maybe you as one of the biggest countries in the Balkans want small one as you enemy.

  • Hellenic Headbreaker

Ah “Peter Givens” you’re fun to deal with. Yes Alexander was Macedonian; and by that he was an Hellene from the northern Hellenic region of Macedonia; bravo you make sense there at least. Macedonian language?! Haha nice one- more like it’s Bulgarian. And besides numbskull this is what you meant to say:

The Rosetta Stone is an Ancient Egyptian artifact which was instrumental in advancing modern understanding of hieroglyphic writing. The stone is a Ptolemaic era stele with carved text. The text is made up of three translations of a single passage, written in two Egyptian language scripts (hieroglyphic and Demotic), and in classical Greek. It was created in 196 BC, discovered by the French in 1799 at Rosetta, a harbor on the Mediterranean coast in Egypt, and contributed greatly to the decipherment of the principles of hieroglyphic writing in 1822 by the French scholar Jean-François Champollion. Comparative translation of the stone assisted in understanding many previously undecipherable examples of hieroglyphic writing. The text of the Rosetta Stone is a decree from Ptolemy V, describing the repealing of various taxes and instructions to erect statues in temples.

    And the text of it:
“In the reign of the new king who was Lord of the diadems, great in glory, the stabilizer of Egypt, and also pious in matters relating to the gods, superior to his adversaries, rectifier of the life of men, Lord of the thirty-year periods like Hephaestus the Great, King like the Sun, the Great King of the Upper and Lower Lands, offspring of the Parent-loving gods, whom Hephaestus has approved, to whom the Sun has given victory, living image of Zeus, Son of the Sun, Ptolemy the ever-living, beloved by Ptah; (oh yes many Slavic deities there)

In the ninth year, when Aëtus, son of Aëtus, was priest of Alexander and of the Savior gods and the Brother gods and the Benefactor gods and the Parent-loving gods and the god Manifest and Gracious; Pyrrha, the daughter of Philinius, being athlophorus for Bernice Euergetis; Areia, the daughter of Diogenes, being canephorus for Arsinoë Philadelphus; Irene, the daughter of Ptolemy, being priestess of Arsinoë Philopator: on the fourth of the month Xanicus, or according to the Egyptians the eighteenth of Mecheir. (Some very Slavic sounding names there too! Hahaha)

THE DECREE: The high priests and prophets, and those who enter the inner shrine in order to robe the gods, and those who wear the hawk’s wing, and the sacred scribes, and all the other priests who have assembled at Memphis before the king, from the various temples throughout the country, for the feast of his receiving the kingdom, even that of Ptolemy the ever-living, beloved by Ptah, the god Manifest and Gracious, which he received from his Father, being assembled in the temple in Memphis this day, declared: Since King Ptolemy, the ever-living, beloved by Ptah, the god Manifest and Gracious, the son of King Ptolemy and Queen Arsinoë, the Parent-loving gods, has done many benefactions to the temples and to those who dwell in them, and also to all those subject to his rule, being from the beginning a god born of a god and a goddess—like Horus, the son of Isis and Osirus, who came to the help of his Father Osirus; being benevolently disposed toward the gods, has concentrated to the temples revenues both of silver and of grain, and has generously undergone many expenses in order to lead Egypt to prosperity and to establish the temples… the gods have rewarded him with health, victory, power, and all other good things, his sovereignty to continue to him and his children forever.”

The complete Greek text, in English, is about 1600–1700 words in length, and is about 20 paragraphs long (average 80 words/paragraph).”

So, bucko what “Macedonian” language were you referring to again? Get it through your head that you are a fraud and trying to steal my and my peoples’ history- and I will promise you we will fight tooth and nail to rid this Skopaganda. Again, where are you sources? Some more fun reading:

Down in Southeastern Europe, the blame game continues following the April 2-4 NATO Summit in Bucharest. The following week, the political leadership in Athens and Skopje stayed home to calculate their gains/losses and to decide on the next steps … which will nowl include parliamentary elections in FYROM. The United States tried to keep itself in control of the process (despite several European leaders asking them “politely” to back away from this “European problem”) and demonstrated its preference for using the NATO entry track to keep senior American officials deeply involved in the negotiations.
At the end of the week, fortunately, the UN negotiating track was re-energised, with UN mediator Matt Nimitz announcing a return to the region sometime after April 14.
Let us review some of the possible worst case consequences if the new efforts fail. Allow me to quote from an article in the April 10 edition of the Wall Street Journal, by Janusz Bugajski of the Center for Strategic and International Studies in Washington D.C, entitled “Balkan Fix.”
NATO’s summit in Bucharest last week provided limited blessings for the Balkans. Although Albania and Croatia were invited into the alliance, FYROM was shunted into the waiting room, Serbia remained on the sidelines, and Russia’s persistent threats of renewed regional conflict over Kosovo went unchallenged. The most glaring summit negative was the postponed decision on FYROM’s NATO membership.
The country’s entry was blocked by Greece after years of stalled negotiations over the country’s name and the formal usage of that name. The FYROM appellation without a geographic or political qualifier is viewed in Athens as a direct challenge to Hellenic patrimony and identity, making it impossible for the Greek parliament to ratify FYROM’s NATO entry.
Unfortunately, the FYROManian authorities became overconfident that Washington would prevail as a mediator in the dispute with Athens and failed to adopt an acceptable compromise position. The country’s invitation to NATO depends solely on an agreement with Greece – a prospect that may now prove even more elusive than before the summit. It is hard to argue with Bugajski’s review of the summit’s results. Nor is this the place to blame Washington or Skopje for misreading Greek intentions regarding a veto on FYROM entry without an acceptable solution. Let us look at the possible negative regional consequences of a continuing stalemate. Again quoting Mr. Bugajski:
•In the wake of NATO’s postponement, FYROManian politics is likely to radicalise. The fragile government, already abandoned by its Albanian coalition partners, could be forced to resign if it agrees to a new name that would entail a constitutional amendment. One can expect a flurry of accusations against Athens and a resurgence of nationalist passions. But this would only diminish FYROM’s reputation as a reliable NATO candidate.
Unless a sound strategy is devised in negotiations with Greece, with high-level U.S. involvement, the ensuing political turmoil may encourage leaders of the Albanian minority to push for territorial autonomy in a swath of territory bordering Kosovo and Albania. This would capsize the Ohrid agreement painstakingly devised to ensure interethnic co-existence in a unitary state following the Albanian insurgency in the summer of 2001.
The broader regional consequences of not resolving FYROM could also prove destabilizing. If Skopje does not promptly recognize Kosovo’s statehood and fails to conclude a border agreement with Pristina, it could encourage some Albanian militants inside FYROM to push for territorial adjustments. The militants might also conclude, in the absence of NATO membership, that Macedonia is merely a “temporary state.”
Russia will also seek to benefit from FYROManian uncertainties by prodding for closer economic, political and security ties with Skopje and claiming to be a stalwart protector against pan-Albanianism and “Islamic terrorism.” The objective will be to add another property on Moscow’s expanding Monopoly board and construct a chain of Balkan dependencies stretching toward Central and Western Europe.
Mr. Bugajski lays out a pretty frightening scenario which could, with the wrong alignment of factors, take us as far as the title of this Airgram: “Oblivion.” By this I mean the dissolution of FYROM as we know it today with its territory divided up in a yet-to-be -devised formula among its Slavic and Albanian neighbors, (but probably all of them NATO or EU members or on track for it. ) Of course, Bugajski has dwelled excessively on the downside risks in order to justify his prescription of “high-level U.S. involvement” which many in Europe believe actually contributed to the failure at Bucharest (as an overconfident Skopje failed to compromise).
Would it be so bad for the Balkans if the territory that is now FYROM joined NATO and the EU attached to Bulgaria, Albania or even Kosovo? This writer is not so convinced that this is a net loss for anybody in the region beyond those with high governmental positions in Skopje, and a few NATO country ambassadors who enjoy living there. It might contribute to more effective regional transport and energy networks and increased resistance to Russian efforts to re-penetrate the Balkans. Let us not forget, foreign embassies were — as recently as 2001— planning their evacuation from Skopje when the Albanian insurgency managed to briefly shell the international airport (then called Petrovec, now called “Alexander the Great”), south of Skopje. This is recent history.
With this in mind, one would think the political leadership in Skopje would understand what is at stake in the upcoming negotiations with Greece – accommodation or oblivion. Even more, the voters in FYROM will need to examine these issues carefully in the upcoming elections. It is clearly their choice, not one for Athens or elsewhere.

Mmm I like the sound of that- enjoy your temporary statehood.

  • MKD

There are three distinctive texts on the Rosetta Stone. The Demotic text has recently been deciphered as Ancient Macedonian, very similar to present-day Macedonian.

    http://rosetta-stone.etf.ukim.edu.mk/EN/index.html

But you should be commended on your ability to copy/paste from Wikipedia. Well done!

  • Hellenic Headbreaker

Admittedly Wikipedia is by no means the best source of information out there; but it beats the Spokaganda you have been throwing at us hands down.

That link however is some of the most idiotic nonsense imaginable. my brain hurt reading it- and nice bastardisation of the name “Aristotelis” by the clown who wrote it- you going to steal our names too?!- at least Wikipedia is peer-reviewed and has some credibility; I commend you for putting up some magnificent Skopaganda- try telling the academic community that the Rosetta Stone has an Ancient Slavic language on it- as that’s what so-called “Macedonian” is; they’ll kill themselves laughing. Nobody has ever even supported this idiotic theory- even your own scientists don’t as you’ll see below; it looks like a “Ristov Special” to anybody who actually has a shred of education or a brainstem for the matter.

So you’re pretty much telling me then Monsiuer MKD that you can read the text I transcribed for you and understand it? If so then bravo, you’re Hellenic.

Now to destroy your claims I actually contacted the Egyptology department of the British Musuem and this is their reply a while ago when I got wind of this idiocy:

Subject: A quick question about the Demotic text of the Rosetta stone

    Greetings
As far as I know the demotic text of the Rosetta stone has been decoded and translated many years ago. However, two academics from the UKIM university in Skopje, Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia claim to have decyphered the code and identified it as Slavic instead of Egyptian. Mr. Boshevskis and Tentovs work has been published in the official pages of UKIM: http://rosetta-stone.etf.ukim.edu.mk…v-appendix.pdf

What is the Brittish museums position to this claim? Is it accepted as an ortodox method of decypherment, is it under examination or has it been dropped?

    Kind Regards
    …….

    Luckily I received an answer…

    Dear Mr …,

Thank you for you enquiry about this piece of research on the Rosetta Stone. The common consensus among Egyptologists is indeed that Demotic was successfully and fully deciphered in the 19th century and that the language – now very extensively studied – is a form of Later Egyptian (e.g. Antonio Loprieno, Ancient Egyptian: A Linguistic Introduction, Cambridge University Press), from the Afro-Asiatic language family. As far as I am aware no Egyptologist or historical linguist has given any credence whatsoever to this alternative theory.

    With best wishes,

    … …
    Dr R. B. …
    Assistant Keeper (curator)

Dept of Ancient Egypt and Sudan
    The British Museum
    London WC1B 3DG

Hmm that sure destroys your point MKD

And more: In 1858, the Philomathean Society of the University of Pennsylvania published the first COMPLETE English translation of the Rosetta Stone. Three undergraduate members, Charles R Hale, S Huntington Jones, and Henry Morton, made the translation. The translation quickly sold out two editions and was internationally hailed as a monumental work of scholarship.

SORRY, NO TRACE OF THE FYROMIAN LANGUAGE ON THE ROSETTA STONE

The text is made up of three translations of a single passage, written in two Egyptian language scripts (hieroglyphic and demotic), and in classical Greek.
The Rosetta Stone is a well-known example from a series of decrees, the Ptolemaic Decrees, issued by the Greek Ptolemaic dynasty, which ruled Egypt from 305 BC to 30 BC.

“The Rosetta stone is the purest testimony of the Greek origin of Macedonians”
    M Cary

The Rosetta stone 196BC is a stone tablet bearing three inscriptions in two languages. It became the key for unlocking the lost language of hieroglyphs & provided a portal to the ancient world of Egypt. Thanks to the help of Greek language the revealed ramifications were astounding. Great secrets of the past & new stories of the Bible would be unraveled, all by virtue of this single stone. Greek Macedonian Dynasty played a very important role providing this portal to Ancient Egyptian history

The Rosetta stone is dated to March 196 BC, in the 9th year of Ptolemy V. The background to the setting up of the stela was the confirmation of the control of the Ptolemaic kings over Egypt. The Ptolemies were Greeks who had been ruling Egypt since the fragmentation of the Empire of Alexander the Great, and while they built temples in the Egyptian style, their lifestyle and language remained exclusively Greek. Egypt had by now become a multi-cultural society, a mixture of Greek and Egyptian

FYROMs SCIENTIST: Mariya Stankovska-Dzamali [Epigraphist scientist] in Utrinski Vesnik (Skopian newspaper)

“What worries me is the modern trend to proove the existance of an ancient Macedonian language as well to relate the modern Macedonian language with it.I think first & foremost about the work of both informaticians in which they appear with exegesis of the Demotic script from the Rosseta Stone.

The most shocking was the publicity given to this exegesis in the Macedonian newspapers & TV stations
Demotic script is a handwritten variant of the Egyptian hyerogliphes and it is deciphered in the 19th century by the French scientist Champolion. The Rosseta Stone is not the only one who carries this script, there are hundreds of tablets, monuments and stones which are perfectly truly deciphered.

With all the noise,Macedonia lost much in the eyes of International International Science. After excursions like these, it is difficult to proof that we have serious scientists, too.”

And a final note: nteresting note: it is hosted on the “etf” subdomain of the UKIM University website.”Etf” stands for “Elektro-tehnički fakultet”-“Electro-Technical Faculty”

How absurd! A paper of linguistic nature (never mind that it is pseudoscientific to the core) is on a webpage of an Electro-Technical Faculty!

The explanation is simple. This Aristotel Tentov character is specialized in Electrical Engineering and how someone with such skills can be related to an entirely irrelevant, yet complex topic in linguistics field is really beyond me! I guess this is what years of Communism does to your brains.

Nice try but no one buys it.

  • Hellenic Headbreaker

Here’s what Tentov had to say:

“Thanks for your interest in the Rosetta Stone, and our results concerning
deciphering the middle text on it.

Despite contemporary scholars who assumed that the middle text is written using
so called demotic script in ancient Egyptian language, our assumption is very
simple: the rullers of Egypt in that period was Ptolemaic dynasty, descendant of
Ptolemy I Soter which was one of the gernerals of the Alexander of Macedon.
Since every ruler make his own language the official language of the conquered
territories, it is expected that the Ancient Macedonian should become the
official language of the Ancient Egypt. When the British conquered among other
territories Australia, they didn’t learn Aborigian language, but make their
mother language the official in that territory.

Ancient MAcedonian didn’t spoke Greek language, they even don’t understand each
other with Greek soldiers. Ancient Macedonian kingdom rules for almost 300 years
with the civilised world, and it is very unlogical to say that they didn’t know
to write on their language at all.

Based on this crucial assumption, using wiring for sound only for consonants and
vowels from modern macedonian language, and detecting the syllabic signs on the
middle text, we are now able to read and write sign by sign on this script.
Contemporary schollars are not able to read sign by sign, they can only read
word by word, assuming that thye middle tex and ancient greek text are not only
with same content but additionaly have the same order of words in the
sentencies. This is another highly unlogical assumption, because different
languages naturaly have different order of words in sentencies.

Beacuse on our site we present the level of our knowledge on this matter in the
middle of year 2006, we are now planning to update it with new results. At this
moment we are in position to read sentence by sentence, and these results shows
that the middle text is with same contents (as one should expect) as the ancient
Danai text. But, this is the only and one similarity. The structure of
sentencies, the order of words, and the way of expressing is very different and
unique in the middle text, and also with far more details.

I hope that I succedd to explain a little bit more on this matter, and I’m
stying at your disposal for further questions and clarifications.”

Hmm note the pathetic grammar, stupid arguments and the fact that this work is not based on a rigorous scientific or any other academic method save for speculatively guessing what each symbol means and you have an exercise in stupidity at its finest.

These clowns who produced this hogwash are not historians. One is portrayed as an ‘Academic’ from M.A.N.U. (Macedonian Academy of Arts and Science) and our clown here Tentov is from the “Institute of Computer Technique and Informatics at the Faculty of Electrical Engineering in Skopje”. In other words two unrelated clowns both with linguistics and history;I always thought you need grounding in those disciplines to be able to write articles on it; guess you don’t in FYROM- but then maybe my education at Australian National University and Tokyo University (among the top 20 in the world) have been shamed by the meticulous attention to scholarly integrity and expert use of all relible/credible academic sources; I wasted my life going to credible educational instutitions when FYROM has such great courses in Pseudosciences, Psuedohistory and Historical Fabrication…

Bravo FYROM, your education system shames us all. (hahaha)

    One last word:

“We have often heard from the Macedonists that they are not Bulgarians but Macedonians, descendants of the Ancient Macedonians, and have always waited to hear some proof of this, but have never heard it. The Macedonists have never shown us the basis for their beliefs. They insist on their Macedonian origin….”

This is a 1888 petition by a group of students of the Bulgarian school in Thessaloníki to the Serbian Ministry of Enlightenment and Church Matters:
Signed among others by Damijan Grujović, later known as Dame Gruev, one of the top bosses of historical VMRO.
