    Excellent question. I think it is just adopted from foreign influence without any meaning other than that the cake is seen as a way to celebrate (wedding/birthday), and if you want to fully celebrate you should have the candles, and blow them out. But I am very interested in learning about any meaning that someone else sees in it.
