In China, if a rural peasant got killed in a traffic accident, the compensation is likely to be much lower than those with a urban household registration. Recently, Liu Xiaoyuan won a case in Beijing for a “same life same price” compensation of a car accident which killed a rural businessman (zh). Earlier this year, the district court ruled for a RMB78,600 (USD10,000) compensation; Liu managed to challenge the district court ruling in the higher court and bring the compensation to RMB176,530 (USD24,000).
