How does one acheive GM status?

  • As I understand it, you need to have a ranking of over 2500 – even if you don’t maintain it for a long period of time – and you need two successful tournaments playing against other Grandmasters. It’s quite an achievement.

I was at the world chess federation web site today, 2/10/2007 and Amon is still rated as an Internationa Master. Can someone clear this misinformation!

Okay the way i understand this is that although he has his norms he has to get his rating above 2500 and then he will in every way be considered a grandmaster but then again i have seen quite a few grandmasters of less than 2500 strength or rating but this could have been because it has come down.
